Tips for Winter Herping?

Post by jibby »

Hi all,

I'm a relatively new herper from Southern California and had some good success in the areas around me this summer. As we move towards colder/wetter months, I was curious if anyone has experience herping year round? I plan to look for salamanders once we get some rain, but I have heard some people have luck with snakes/lizards year round. How should I change my approach with winter herping? I'd imagine road cruising might be less effective if temperatures don't get high enough during the day. Is flipping more productive? Would warmer days relative to average be better to target?

Part of what I have enjoyed about herping is just getting out to explore and try new things. Just thought this may be an interesting discourse as we transition seasons to hear how others may adjust their approach.
