Herp Art
Kysnakeguy's recent post gave me an idea. Obviously we here are all obsessed with herps, and I know a lot of us like to make herp art. How bout a thread where people post pics of herp art they've done. I know I have found a lot of what I've seen here very impressive. So share some more with us!
Here is some of mine from the past couple years:
red eyed tree frog
green mamba, still in the works
baby cooter
sea turtle
blue dart frog, drawn from one of my own photos

Thanks guys. I hardly have time anymore either. I just got a new job, and at least 4 projects in the works that I have no idea when I'm going to finish.
Come on, I wanna see some other people's stuff!

Re: Herp Art
I used to do some rough sketches herps when I'd get bored in my college days. Sorry about the quality-I didn't scan these, just took quick snapshots of them. First up is a portrait inspired by a blue tongued skink I used to have.
I once tried to recreate a fischer's chameleon from a picture in a book too (and took some liberties with the diameter of its perch).

Those are all awesome! I LOVE herp art. Russ, that frog head is amazing! For some reason I seem to gravitate to drawing turtles, even though they are not my favorite herp (rattlesnakes are).

Beautiful technique, crocdoc. Did it ever make it onto your biz card?

Re: Herp Art
My contribution...
Pencil drawing of a female adder (Vipera berus)
... which became this acrylic painting. This is hopefully going to be used in an upcoming book about adders (please note, it is copyrighted!).
Here's a scientific drawing which I did for my research paper (publication pending) on this Madagascan species, Pararhadinaea melanogaster. As far as I know, it is the only drawing of this snake, as it is only known from 9 individuals (3 of them I found! Woohoo!). Annoyingly, for scientific drawings all shading has to be done using different concentrations of dots!!! (also copyrighted!).
Finally, a bit more "arty", an acrylic painting of a hawksbill turtle!
Some great stuff on this thread guys, well done!

Robbie, the dot technique is called stippling and was a preferred method of shading for me for many years, ever since I learned it in a highschool art class. You're right, it is annoying, and has started to hurt my eyes as I get older. Now I avoid it. LOL
Excellent drawings!!

Re: Herp Art
Russ Jones, I love that picture of the underside of the treefrog, awesome.
Let me be the first to post a picture of the art of jewelry making with herps as the subject. I recently picked up these earings in SC, I think the artist paid incredible attention to detail and the earings just seem so lifelike...

Having no artistic talent myself has never stopped me from deeply appreciating it in others - everything you folks are putting up is amazing!
crocdoc, your painting in particular just blows me away! What happened to the original? Is it now hanging in a museum somewhere?

Some really nice stuff here...lots of hidden talent. If any of you artists would be interested in having your illustrations used in Herp Review, please contact me at the address below. We typically have open spots throughout each issue, and I like to fill those with various sorts of illustrations, ranging from "technical" drawings to more artistic interpretations. I can provide more info to anyone interested. Thanks!

Re: Herp Art
Stippling or pointilism is an effective illustration technique for some subjects. I never found it annoying (I use both hands and two pens so it goes faster).
I illustrate mostly objects left behind by primitive screwheads, but have been kicking around the idea of expanding into biology.
It even works for water-rolled artifacts-
Other methods are better for other materials.

Re: Herp Art
Thanks! After a long stint under my bed, the alligator painting is currently in my living area, on the floor, leaning on a bookshelf. I promised myself that when I found the time I'd give it some needed touch-ups and get it framed, maybe even hang it up on a wall. A rainy day project on top of the other rainy day projects I have lined up when my current rainy day project is finished.gbin wrote:crocdoc, your painting in particular just blows me away! Sadly, it doesn't rain often enough here.
Wolverton, nice drawings of hand tools and arrowheads! I like the look of stippling and have done a lot of it in the past for scientific publications, but I'm not sure I'd still have the patience. I don't know if it's still the case now, with the advent of digital printing processes, but not long ago it was the only way to get a nice gradation while using inexpensive black and white printing processes.

Thanks Will, I've been drawing since I could hold a pencil. I dig your Petrosaurus. I did one similar to that as a thank you to Victor Velazquez when we were in Baja...wonder if he still has it.

Steve & Russ,
Have you ever submitted any of your work to Prehistoric Times? They don't pay anything but they do publish it. If you are interested in contacting them, pm me.
Steve, Thanks for the rhino!
Russ, my favorite ancestor were the ceratopsians.

Those are amazing pictures guys! The only thing I can draw are flies!
Re: Herp Art
crocdoc, maybe you should consider selling that alligator painting to me and using that future rainy day to paint an entirely new one just the way you want it, to save yourself from having to do those touch-ups! (I could seriously be interested, if you could bring yourself to part with it at a price I could afford.)
And still more amazing work has been posted since my last message - you guys rock!

Re: Herp Art
Gerry, if you're serious I'd be happy to discuss, but keep in mind shipping costs as it's around 1 metre high and on masonite, so it can't be rolled!
Re: Herp Art
Hmmm, I was serious, but it sounds to me as if more house than I have might be needed to properly display it. It must be stunning in real life!
Out of curiosity, why masonite?

Man, I HATE you guys/gals with all this talent! Just kidding, but I AM jealous. Re: Herp Art
I know this thread has been dead for a year (to the day, in fact) and this has been referred to as 'thread necromancy' on another forum I visit, but here goes anyway. Recently I was digging through some old illustrations as I needed to scan a few and I decided that while I was at it I may as well scan a few extras to throw on here. These were originally commissioned for a number of different books and were all painted in acrylic on illustration board, before I went digital (although two have had digital alterations after being scanned).

I've been doodling since I was very young, turned down an art scholarship (only the second ever offered at my school), and I'm too scared to post after seeing what you guys have put up. This thread is very humbling, and I'm very impressed all around. So many talented people here. What an amazing community we have.
