Species gaps by County

Post by FunkyRes »

Jonathon did this for Southern California before forum crash. I stated I was going to try for NorCal.
I think it is important to try and fill in as many gaps as possible, so I'll try to do two NorCal county per month. When visiting those counties, it would be cool to try and target those species if possible to fill in some gaps.

I'll use CAS and MVZ to determine what species we should have records for in what NorCal counties.

Currently missing from Shasta County:

Northern Rubber Boa - Charina bottae
Coast Nightsnake - Hypsiglena ochrorhyncha
Desert Striped Whipsnake - Coluber taeniatus taeniatus
Shasta Alligator Lizard - Elgaria coerulea shastensis
Blainville’s Horned Lizard - Phrynosoma coronatum - Probably extirpated in county
California Whiptail - Aspidoscelis tigris munda
Western Spadefoot - Spea hammondii - Possibly extirpated, may be present in some land protected for Orcutt grass (which requires vernal pools)
Coastal Tailed Frog - Ascaphus truei
California Red-logged Frog - Rana draytonii - Probably extirpated in county
Oregon Spotted Frog - Rana pretiosa - Probably extirpated in county
Coastal Giant Salamander - Dicamptodon tenebrosus
California Slender Salamander - Batrachoseps attenuatus
Southern Long-toed Salamander - Ambystoma macrodactylum sigillatum
Sierra Newt - Taricha torosa sierrae

Except for Spadefoot Toad, every species above has a museum record I am aware of. Spadefoot doesn't have records I am aware of but has historic localities indicated by a DF&G Report (Jennings and Hayes 1994 pg 94-95)

Next Month: I'll list Lassen and Modoc Counties (they'll be big lists)
Anyone still have SoCal missing species by county?

I'll tell you what we're missing... JONATHON!! He really was (and is) a database phenom...
In my first term as an officer (Con.) and back when we had 'open' outings, I had proposed that rather than going to the same places year after year (Cab., Borr. Sp, ect) we try to fill in the 'gaps' county by county, until we had basically ALL of So Cal surveyed. But, given the problems inherent to the 'open to the public' outings, we went in another direction, which has worked out well.
I still think, that in addittion to the surveys of conservation areas, a comprehensive assay of all Ca. Counties/areas/habitats is a worthwhile goal. I think I even suggested a members-only, invite-only 'herp team' to be formed, to survey 'public lands' thus reducing the 'trustworthyness' issues associated with 'open' outings. Just an idea... but one that may be viable in NorCal. I will say that every Nafha member I have met 'up north' has been what I would consider very Trustworthy! cyaaa... jim
Hopefully someone will step up and try to fill Jonathan's shoes, in regard to qualifying/quantifying data... I sure don't have the chops for it, nor the equipment...

I just did Contra Costa County - using MVZ only but I don't believe CAS has anything MVZ doesn't there.

San Francisco Alligator Lizard - Elgaria coerulea
Western Side-blotched Lizard - Uta stansburiana elegans
San Joaquin Coachwhip - Coluber flagellum ruddocki - May be extirpated, habitat change
California Nightsnake - Hypsiglena ochrorhyncha nuchalata
Coast Gartersnake - Thamnophis elegans terrestris
California Red-sided Gartersnake - Thamnophis sirtalis infernalis
?? Valley Gartersnake - Thamnophis sirtalis fitchii ??
Diamondback Watersnake - Nerodia rhombifer - Introduced, formerly established, possibly extirpated
Foothill Yellow-legged Frog - Rana boylii

I know some locales for some of those, I'll try to hit them when in Contra Costa next year.

EDIT - removed a few for which there are closed records, thus they didn't show up in search.

For what's left, I know locales for E coerulea, T elegans, T s infernalis and historic N rhombifer. If they are not vouchered in CCC by end of March, I will see what I can find for them (hell. might anyway even if they are). Historic (very old) locales for Uta I've checked turned up squat, but I hear they are still occasionally seen in Diablo area. Where, don't know, but ...

I don't believe I've found one, but I know a few people that have. If they will not enter in the data, I will for them, giving them credit of course.
Guess I forgot to add what species I didn't find! California Nightsnake in Contra Costa County.

Cheers,
Chad

I'm sure I have my old lists sitting around somewhere, though they'd have to be updated. But Psyon already put together a great resource for us to check species/county much more easily:

http://www.nafha.org/california-chapter ... -by-county

Of course, letting people know what should be in the area and is still missing from the database is helpful for sure.

What reference did you use for Phrynosoma douglasii in Lassen Co.? There are no true occurrences I know of, and they realistically shouldn't be there, but I do know of two (false) sources indicating they are present in Lassen. But, you can add Sonora semiannulata to that list.

For P douglassi I used the dot locality map at California Herps.

That's what I figured. I don't know where Tim B. found that locality back when he made that map, but as far as I know only P. platyrhinos occurs in Lassen Co., especially from the area where that map shows the locality dot (Honey Lake Basin region). Verified P. douglasii specimens are only known from Siskiyou and Modoc Co.'s in CA.

Okay, I've found my old records and I'll update them county by county.

First off, Imperial County. There are only 200 vouchered records in naherp.com for Imperial County, which means that lots of the 49 taxa that are recorded have only a few entries and therefore large gaps in distribution. This is what's in the database (I noted if there were fewer than 5 entries or if none had been found and recorded in the last two years):

Herps recorded for the NAHERP database in Imperial County

Rio Grande Leopard Frog (only 4)
American Bullfrog (only 1 vouchered entry)

Okay, now here's San Diego County. San Diego County has an impressive 2,838 vouchered entries already. However, it's a large county and those records are split between 81 different taxa, so there are still gaps in distribution and many taxa that need a lot more entries. Once again I noted if any taxa had less than 5 entries or hadn't been recorded in the last 2 years.

Herps recorded for the NAHERP database in San Diego County

I saw that there are no entries for green sea turtles in SD county.

I definitely saw a juvenile from my kayak right off La Jolla Shores in August 2005, but didn't have a camera on me then, so there are no voucher shots. :( But it surfaced only 25 feet from me and having snorkeled with them in Hawaii, I am quite sure it was a green sea turtle.

I take it we only want vouchered sightings in the database, correct?

There is ongoing debate about including unvouchered records in the database, with many people (including myself) in favor of it. I think a record like that could definitely be put in unvouchered just for interest, but I wouldn't do it unless I had a good idea of the date in addition to the location and ID.

Green Sea Turtles are occasional wanderers into San Diego County waters, but there's a permanent population in San Diego Bay near some industrial warm water outflow.

Unvouchered = worthless..

Next year in the California Contest your going to get a "county record" for anything found in a county that hasn't been recorded in the last 5 years....

PS there are NO rat snakes in California..

Riverside County has a lot of good data: 1863 entries for 86 different taxa. But it's also a very spread-out county, and certain herps are limited. Salamanders have been very poorly covered in the county, though the region of it that most species occupy is relatively small.

Funky: You forgot the Mtn King (L. zonata) in Modoc and Lassen counties...(see my book). :D I have them listed under the Sierra subspecies. I drew an arbitrary cut-off line, but I think the Sierra and St Helena should be merged.

Yeah - the corner of LA County that would have the greatest chance of having sidewinders is poorly vouchered. I am unfamiliar with that region and have never herped it, so I can't tell you whether they're there or not.

San Bernardino County has 1051 records for 85 taxa (a few of which are in error), but it's also the biggest county in the lower 48, so it could certainly benefit from many more records. Without hexagonal mapping it’s hard to tell which areas of the county have and haven't been covered well, but the amphibians and everything aquatic could use a lot more work.

The following herps have been entered into the database for San Bernardino County:

San Gabriel Slender Salamander (only 1 record from 2006)
Blackbelly Slender Salamander (only 1 record)
Garden Slender Salamander
Monterey Ensatina

Kern County is a fantastic meeting point of many different habitats, and it's surprising that there isn't more herp data recorded from there. Many of the species that have been recorded in the county only have entries from 1 or 2 people, so the spread of data through the country is probably poor. At this point the database has 578 vouchered records from Kern County of 72 different taxa, with many species (especially snakes) still unrecorded.

If you're asking me why I didn't list it, it's because no one has recorded one in the database, I've never heard anyone mention that they might get into RC (or really anywhere north of the Borrego Springs vicinity), and because Californiaherps.com lists their range as not getting into RC. If you're asking me why they aren't found in RC, I don't have enough experience with that border to tell you.

Ventura County is right next to LA County but has a somewhat more limited range of habitats and does not get nearly as much herping activity. As a result, more data is needed for pretty much everything. So far the database has 252 vouchered records of 39 taxa from Ventura County.

I'm not at home right now, but one of these nights I will try to do Alameda and Siskiyou Counties.

Eventually when all counties are done, I may make a web page (*maybe* ask Don to host it??) with all counties in alphabetical order, and every 3 months check each county for new records of missing herps. Kind of a vacation planning page for those looking for county record fame and glory ;)

I was commenting on them not being in the data base section of your list as opposed to them being in the recorded in the database section. I think it's reasonable to believe that they do occur in RC. Anyway, I guess I got hung up on the SD county list where you stated "Herps that may be in San Diego County..." and figured you were being consistent with the rest of the counties that followed, but re-reading I see you changed the lists titles so I don't know what your really trying to convey now.

I'm basically trying to convey the same thing. I wrote those lists back in 2009 and am hardly paying attention to what they're titled (though I noticed it was inconsistent), but I'm definitely trying to state what herps "may be in" each one. I just wasn't aware that anyone thought switaki may be in Riverside.

Nicely done....though most of the ruber and S. orcutti records the database does have for SB County (along with the orange-throated and coastal whiptails) are probably from right by that coptic church already. You and I should know because we put them there! Getting B.m. major there too though is really nice. I'm sure there's more stuff too if we hit it at the right time - I always seem to get there a little too late in the season.

Santa Barabara County is out of the way for most herpers and as a result gets little herping activity, despite the presence of a number of species not found elsewhere in southern California. Like Santa Barbara County, San Luis Obispo County is poorly covered in the database, despite the presence of a number of interesting habitats (over 20 taxa in SLO County are not found in LA/Riverside/SD Counties). I think all species present in Marin County have been vouchered since I found Rana boylii a few days ago. Here are all the species I believe are present, if anyone has any additions I'd love to hear about them.

California Giant Salamander
Arboreal Salamander
California Slender Salamander
Yellow-eyed Ensatina
Rough-skinned Newt
Coast Range Newt

California Toad
Sierran Treefrog
American Bullfrog
California Red-legged Frog
Foothill Yellow-legged Frog

Western Pond Turtle
Red-eared Slider

San Francisco Alligator Lizard
California Alligator Lizard
Coast Range Fence Lizard
Western Skink

Rubber Boa
Western Yellow-bellied Racer
Common Sharp-tailed Snake
Pacific Ringneck Snake
California Kingsnake
Pacific Gophersnake
Aquatic Gartersnake
Coast Gartersnake
California Red-sided Gartersnake
Northern Pacific Rattlesnake

Marin County probably has the lowest herp diversity in the Bay Area, after San Francisco of course. :(

There are lots of herps for the various counties that have been listed that I've seen on more than one occasion (green sea turtles in San Diego and California newts in San Bernadino county just to name two). I just don't really like carrying a camera with me when i go herping. I don't know if ill catch a lot of flack because of it, but if you drop tongs or a hook in water or step on them they will survive, cameras don't. Also like Fundad said, unvouchered entries are worthless.

MVZ herps for Marin County we do not have vouchered:

Dermochelys coriacea - Leatherback Turtle (2 specimens, early 90s)

The server became unresponsive at Dicamptodon, so I'll have to finish checking later.
I guess we need to keep a look out on the beach for washed up dead Sea Turtles ;)

Speckled Black Salamanders fall into a particularly frustrating (to me) category of herps that could very well live in Marin County, but don't for whatever reason. The terrain in this tiny area is probably some of the most variable of any county in California, containing coastal chaparral, mountain chaparral, ancient redwood forests, rocky pine forests, oak woodlands, grasslands, wetlands - you name it we probably have it - but a lot species are strangely absent from the region.

The ones I can think of off the top of my head, in addition to the Speckled Black Salamander, are the Northwestern Salamander, California Tiger Salamander, Red-bellied Newt, California Legless Lizard, Side-blotched Lizard, California Whiptail, Forest Sharp-tailed Snake, California Mountain Kingsnake, and the Striped Racer. All of these species would have suitable habitat here, but for some reason they are absent. The fact that the montane habitats are separated from those in the rest of the Bay Area by water and the lowlands of southern Sonoma County probably has something to do with it for some species, but not for several others.

I don't think I'll be finding a Leatherback Sea Turtle any time soon around here.

I just added Santa Cruz Island Gopher Snake to Santa Barbara county. The record is not mine but from a friend who is a naturalist guide for Island Packers. Interesting photos showing aberrant pattern and eating of a deer mouse, which I believe was already dead. The snake was photographed in situ with not staging of the mouse etc.
