Good idea Brad. Here's another with a good feel about it. 'Kinda makes me homesick for warm snake-y nights...

Weird that the title of the thread is "Best herp pic of 2010!" but there hasn't been a herp visible in any of the pics yet!
I'll fan those flames with a West TX highway 385 shot:

I've beaten this picture to death but it is still my "favorite pic of the most favorite herp" found this year.
Pine Barrens treefrog (Hyla andersonii) from NC.

Since we are roaming on the overall them by including road shots, here's a favorite road shot of mine from last year (cheating twice over I guess)!

My favorite this year, mostly due to the amount of work I put into it to get what I wanted.

Kevin,
I'm intrigued by the work you put into this picture. What exactly did you want and how did you achieve it?

Thanks Tim, I like your's too. Nice how the road curves round to the setting sun. Is that a distant mosquito in the top center of the frame?

My favorite photo I have taken this year, I lay on a pier and dangled off of it, holding my camera right above the the tip of its nose for this one. One of those few shots that I don't just play by ear but had envisioned something similar to this even before I left the states.

A green lizard (Lacerta bilineata). My favorite pic of the year. I am trying to work on taking of the macro and using the wide angle.

A couple of my favorites from this year.
Re: Best herp pic of 2010!

Thanks guys! Yeah I was a little nervous when I was doing it especially cause it was obvious the croc was acclimated to humans and had most likely been given food by them in the past. I was pretty on edge the entire time and trying not to think about how much my arm resembled a slab of chicken dangling over him. It took me a long time to work up to that shot, I only did it when I was completely sure he was uninterested in me and I still didn't keep myself out there for a second longer than I had to. I'm just glad it ended up being worth the effort.Anton,Wow man not only amazing but scary to think about how you did it.

This is not going to win any awards but the first time I observed combat in Crotalus was the highlight of my year:
Re: Best herp pic of 2010!
Here's my favorite shot. My only Eastern King of the year. Plus it was absolutely flawless. I loved the overcast lighting of the day. I loved that I nailed it technically (in respect to what I was going for) and without a flash. I prefer photos, non flash. So it was kinda like my favorite picture of one of my favorite animals of the year. Plus I was with my three kids and we all loved the snake. VERY hard to let go, but I did.

Brick, that's an absolutely "classic sports car" of an Eastern. Great paint job; great pic.

Los Angeles County lifer Scute from June.

Yeah, I know right?! Someone earlier in the year asked if I put a finish of clear coat on it first. There wasn't a spec of blemish on the entire thing. It was a lucky day.

Great shot brick911 and everyone else. A Newport phase, just what I was hoping to see that year. I got lucky with him posing like that on his own.

I got 9 lifers this year, but this isn't one of them. It is the coolest little herp I saw in 2010, however.

Never seen an eastern baby box turtle, you can never really envision how small they are without something to set next to it for scale.
Re: Best herp pic of 2010!
I'll join in on the fun! Great pictures for everyone!! I'll go with a favorite reptile and favorite amphib shot.
For the amphibians, I chose this adult/larvae spring salamander shot. The species was a lifer and they are a most interesting species to search for and observe!!
The reptile pic is this pair of Eastern Massassauga Rattlesnake (Prob. Females) basking. I just love this species and finding two at the same time was quite the highlight!!

Re: Best herp pic of 2010!
Didn't get out much this year and can't recall seeing any lifers, or anything really exceptional either. Snake road was terrible in October and I didn't make it down last spring. No trips to speak of...surely there must have been something cool...
oh yeah, an in situ brownsnake taking a swim
and I DID find a lifer...
and I did see this cool mating ball last spring...
Who knew? maybe last year wasn't so bad afterall?

Re: Best herp pic of 2010!
just started even TRYING to herp around late november, don't know what I was thinking. This is probably my favorite shot of 2010, common fence lizard but one that i know well, as he lives about 20 feet from my house. sorry about the quality, i've just got a crappy point and shoot camera w/bad resolution.
Just gotta love in situ shots!

Those leopard lizards are awesome. They remind me of little velociraptors. Very cool.

Glad you dig it Justin! ...they are bad lizards.
