Larval Salamander ID

Post by d_tigrinum »

Hello,

I am hoping for some assistance on larval salamanders I found back in mid-May 2021, in southeastern Washington. Both long-toed and tiger salamander are possible and have been observed in the area. I sent the pictures to a local herp expert and she was leaning towards long-toed, but was not certain. Thought I'd try to get more eyes on it.

If it helps, average total length (snout to end of tail) was about 45 mm. All these individuals were found in the same small pond.

Thank you!!

Have you tried iNaturalist? Lots of expert eyes available there.

I'm leaning on Long-Toed, from what I've observed by looking at many photos Tiger Salamanders have usually way less or no tail patterning and when they do it's more faded. Though in general it's hard to properly identify Ambystoma larvae as we don't quite know how to differentiate many species reliably. (ex: Spotted and Blue-Spotted Salamander Larvae are often identical).
