Black/Yellow Rat Snake Intergrade?

Post by RowlandP »

Not sure what to make of fellow's parentage. Whatever it is, it produced one spectacular Pantherophis. Thoughts? From coastal NC.

That's typical of the yellow/black variant integration area of the Eastern Ratsnake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis). Go south or to the coast, they tend to lighten to a light green. Go inland and by Raleigh or north by Virginia and they're already pretty black.
