Reccomendations for pygmies

Post by tuckerh13 »

Hi everyone! I am hoping to take a trip this month to look for dusky pygmy rattlesnakes. I have been looking at Conecuh NF and Apalachicola NF. Any suggestions or tips for either of these places?

I predict you will not receive many responses with the help you seek, since many people are not only protective of "their" sites, but of the animals themselves--especially when asked by someone who joined FHF four days ago and provides no name or background information. ;)

I completely understand; however, I'm not looking for anyone's certain spot. I was just hoping for someone to tell me if one NF would be better than the other or if I needed to search somewhere else entirely.

Gulf Coast pygmies this time of year: They are going to be in the most deer-fly-infested places. If the flies are so bad that you risk life by leaving the car, then you are in pygmy heaven. This is not a joke.

My recommendation for pygmies is to quit eating each other's heads and try a more balanced diet, not unlike that recommended by the USDA.

As a general rule, telling a given National forest is obscure enough to not qualify as a "specific location", especially with such a large area and such a wide variety of habitats. (The flies criterion may well be true at some times of the year! )

It's difficult to NOT find Pygmies in ANF.

Thanks! Is road cruising or hiking a better way of finding them?

Road cruising on non-paved roads (many) is most efficient, particularly at dusk and dawn.

There are times as summer continues, and places, where the mosquitos will have fights with yellow flies, ticks, and red bugs (chiggers) as to who will eat you first!

I find them just about every weekend road cruising forest road 13 in ANF from Crawfordville to The end of the road. They are easily the most abundant snake I find there. I usually road cruise the last two hours before dark. Then I go to the paved roads. Let me know if your coming down maybe I can go with you. I usually cruis there either every Friday or Saturday night for about four hours
