I encountered this venomous snake during a walk in the wood in the middle of May

Province of Saratov, Russian Federation

The black morph really contrasts the red eyes.

Do you have a picture of the habitat?

I have no photos of the habitat but I can describe it: mixed forest growing on sandy soil; primary wood species: Quercus robur, Pinus sylvestris, Acer platanoides and Populus tremula; mostly steppe grass species: Salvia officinalis, Artemisia absinthium and others
