Cape cobra and leopard tortoise from Namibia & South Africa

Post by Scott Lupien »

I just got back from a month in Africa and was lucky enough to see a few really cool herps this time. This cape cobra (Naja nivea) was next to the road on the edge of Namibia's Kalahari Desert. I jumped out to get a photo and it dashed into a bush.

Here's me taking some cell phone shots:

A couple of weeks I saw another one, again along the dirt road but in South Africa's Eastern Cape. This one was much more reddish than the first one. Unfortunately I couldn't get a clear photo -- only this crappy one through the fence:

I've seen dozens of leopard tortoises (Stigmochelys pardalis)in Africa, but never anything as huge as these two beauties that I saw within an hour of each other while hiking in South Africa's Eastern Cape:

Hi Scott!

We found also 1 of these amazing yellow cobras in Kalahari in 2014, crossing the road and it was very very fast. They are so cool! The reddish that you found is also nice

Congrats for the findings
