Oklahoma rattlesnakes summer 2015

Post by DarwinsBulldog »

First off, I would like to thank everyone who posts here. I am a long time lurker and have gained a great deal of information and entertainment browsing this forum. I hope I can give just a little back to the community that has offered so much to me here.

SO, I am from NY but I spent a few months this summer doing field work in Oklahoma with the federally endangered carrion beetle Nicrophorus americanus. I took full advantage of my time in the state and spent every opportunity I could herping as well as taking in as much of its natural history as possible. Here are some of the rattlesnakes I encountered during my stay which makes up all of the species found in the state. All pictures were taken with a Nikon D7000 and a 300mm f4 or the 10.5 fisheye.

This first timber I found while going to check my beetle trap. Look how close it was sitting along my little path to my green bucket trap in the back.

Cruised this one not far from the area of the snake pictured above.

Another timber also from the same general region as the previous two.

I loved this post. Oklahoma has some awesome critters. I passed through in late august and met up with a friend. We got a timber on the first cruise of the first night, crossing the road in a fairly developed area. I was surprised by how plentiful the snakes were across the entire state. Great photos!

I'm going to the northwest part of the state. My main target is Heterodon nasicus but I'm also hoping for some Crotes. My dad and I take a camping trip every year and instead of staying in state as usual we decided to get a little bit farther away for once.
