Frog ID Opinion?

Post by BillMcGighan »

Any opinions on this one given the pics.
I'm leaning River over Pig because of the snout shape, but can be talked out of it.

It was on a sand/mud flat on the edge of a tidal creek that is salty on incoming tide and fresh water at low tide.

Even a gestalt opinion may help!

Despite having never seen a River Frog in person, I have seen my share of Pig Frogs, and I would lean towards the former for this one.

It seems to have soem darker blotches on it, which would make me think river. Most of the pigs I've seen are your classic children's book solid green.

Thanks, folks, I do appreciate your input.

There is so much salt/brackish water at this location; I was surprised to see any frog!

Maybe they had “fraud” protection, I mean, “frog” protection?

As far as salt vs frog presence, I have found Leopard Frogs breeding in tidal pools that were nothing but salt water. Not only this, but there with tadpoles at various life stages. Maybe not for a species as a whole, but for populations living near brackish/salt water, over time frogs gradually become accustomed to it? Weak ones die, strong ones live to breed, the usual evolution stuff?

Green Tree Frogs were also present but I didn't witness any breeding or see any tadpoles.

Josh Holbrook and I observed pig frogs and leopards frogs in a tidal salt marsh, we even saw striped mud turtles as well.
