Far-north Queensland, Australia

Post by Mattsnake »

Haven't posted on here in ages, so thought I would throw up a few recent pictures from far-north Queensland. We have had a very pathetic wet season this year, so herping has been fairly average this season unfortunately. But there's still been a few bits and pieces getting around.

Macleay's Water Snake (Pseudoferania polylepis)

Northern Sedge Frog (Litoria bicolor)

Marsh Snake (Hemiaspis signata)

Habitat where Marsh Snakes are found in this part of the country. High altitude rainforest, about 1200m above sea level.

Juvenile Scrub Python (Morelia kinghorni)

Larger Scrub Python

Even bigger Scrub Python

and another big Scrub Python swimming across a rainforest stream

Spotted Python (Antaresia maculosa)

Black Mountain National Park has three herp species that are endemic to it's boulder fields.

Black Mountain Gecko (Nactus galgajuga)
Image

Black Mountain Skink (Liburnascincus scirtetis)
Image

Black Mountain Boulder Frog (Cophixalus saxatilis)
Image

Carpet Python (Morelia spilota)
Image

Northern Death Adder (Acanthophis praelongus)
Image

Boyd's Forest Dragon (Hypsilurus boydii)
Image

Green-eyed Tree Frog (Litoria serrata)
Image

Inland Ring-tailed Gecko (Cyrtodactylus mcdonaldi)
Image

Frilled Neck Lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii)
Image

Arafura File Snake (Acrochordus arafurae)
Image

Quinkan Velvet Gecko (Oedura jowalbinna)
Image

Mulga Snake (Pseudechis australis)
Image

and a few non-herps

Papuan Frogmouth (Podargus papuensis)
Image

Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroos (Dendrolagus lumholtzi)
Image

Mareeba Rock Wallabies (Petrogale mareeba)

Wow. Not just a ton of animals, but spectacular animals they were, herps, mammals and all. Thank you very much for sharing. If you have more, don't hold back! The shot of the python in the water is fantastic (the photography overall was amazing), was it in situ?

Fantastic photography. I love all of the pythons and a great pose of Boyd's Forest Dragon. Your post makes me yearn to return.

What an amazing post. The photography is outstanding and diversity is so cool to see. I am also particularly partial to the swimming scrub python shot. Are tree kangaroos hard to observe?
Thanks for sharing.

I need to see more posts like this. I'm going to be visiting Australia June-August to work on Pseudophryne (down in the Newcastle area), but I will be making my way up to Cairns for a couple weeks for a conference in August. I'm hoping to get some opportunity to get out and herp up there. This is totally getting me psyched for the trip!

It's posts like this that keep me browsing and posting on this forum. Australia is calling me with those pythons.

Yep, it was in situ, I just got lucky and managed to get one shot before it dove into the rocks on the opposite side.

They aren't easy to find initially, but once you figure out where they like to hang out it isn't too hard to find the same individuals in the same area over and over again. They defiantly aren't common that's for sure.

Wow, this post is great! Those boulder fields look so cool! The green-eyed treefrog is gorgeous! Love the non-herp pictures too, frogmouths always make me laugh!

Really great diversity. Your "pathetic" season blows away my entire life-time herping experience.

Very, very wonderful stuff. Thanks for sharing! There are three flash reflections in all the critters' eyes. What's your flash rig?

Thanks again!

Wow. I was just thinking about putting together my post from Port Douglas over Christmas....and now I would be embarrassed next to this post.

Those tree kangaroos might be common some places, but I never figured it out. Spectacular photos!

Fantastic quality of shots throughout Matt, but particularly the wide angle stuff and particularly for me the Macleays.
