Herping NW Ohio April 9-11

A nice variety of cool creatures were found.

A melanistic Eastern Garter Snake.

Leopard Frogs were very common, many were calling.

Smallmouth Salamander - I came across a few of these.

Midland Painted turtle close-up.

Herp habitat.

An Eastern Garter Snake literally found at our front door.
Image

A female American Bullfrog that was missing her front forearm, but otherwise appeared healthy.

Not a herp, but still cool - British Soldier Lichen.

I saw my first Northen Water Snakes of the year on this trip - here's one of them.

More herp habitat.

Bee Mimic flies sure do like me.

Green Frog, these aren't as common as Leopard Frogs in this part of the Buckeye State.

There were many Midland Painted Turtles out basking.

Northern Water Snakes were out basking as well.

Butler's Garter Snake, these aren't as common as Easterns.

Western Chorus Frog - there were many of these calling.

An Eastern Garter Snake with a bit of orange.

Couple of days of nice weather! Great pics man and congrats on that blanding's ... I find fewer and fewer every year. Thanks for posting.

Very nice!

Northeast Ohio has also been rocking recently, at least until this cold snap hit. I am looking forward to a great spring!

The black garters ARE cool. How common are they?
