Ruber or Atrox?

Post by shredsteban »

The answer to this is probably apparent to almost everyone here. I road cruised this DOR "ruber" last summer with a friend on WW. I swore that it was a ruber. He really believed it was an atrox. But from enough reading on here and with the help from Marc Linsalata, I knew atrox's range didn't extend that far West. I'm sticking with ruber. Solely based on the cold hard facts. But if anyone else has any thoughts, feel free to expand!

Would it be possible for you to make your pics smaller in the future? It's really tough to scroll all around to see the different images... :o

IMO, I lean towards Ruber.

Here is a picture of a young Atrox for the the Coachella Valley.

Not even a question to me....ruber. Color and/or pattern, as with a lot of Crotes, isn't really reliable. Here's a little ID trick. The darker "eye stripe" is usually much more verticle in atrox, ending before the rear jaw line. In ruber, it is usually more swept back, ending after the rear jaw line. Check out several pics of each and you'll get the idea. :)

BTW- Fundad, that's a nice looking little guy in your pic. :thumb:
