Haven't done much herping the past few months, but did get dive certified so I plan to do some sea herping for sea snakes in the coming year... that should be epic fun.
I know this is not a herp, but who doesn't love a baby horned shark?
That said I did mosey on over to Louisiana for a few days on the last week of the month and found...
Water, lots of very cold water.
And Mr. Spit Mouth
And a "Congo" as the locals call them...
A Cool in situ of a "congo" basking on a palm leaf...
Of course Nerodia...
And frogs...
Then "Black Friday" in November some friends and I saw some newts...
And my personal favorite shot...
Thanks for viewing and happy holidays!

Thanks!
Planning out my 2014, hoping to make it my "Big Year".
And btw, if you have not seen the film "The Big Year"... even though it is about birds, I think every herper can appreciate that film.

That shark is pretty cool.
Where in Louisiana were you where they called cottonmouths "congos"? Never heard that term.

First person I heard that from I believe was Uncle Si from Duck Dynasty while working on the pilot... so Northern Louisiana around Monroe... but I have also heard it down in Venice (south of NOLA) while doing a pick up shoot for a short lived show on Discovery.Coluber Constrictor wrote:That shark is pretty cool.

They also call nerodia "Fish Snakes" and pantherophis "chicken snakes" or "pilot snakes".
In Venice they called alligator snapping turtles "logger heads" which at first was alarming to hear about people catching logger heads in traps. No less upsetting to know they were eating alligator snappers, but made more sense.

Well when you get here hit me up and we will go for a dive. Saw two in a half hour, they are rather common just minutes from my hibernaculum (home).MattSullivan wrote:love that horn shark. probably my number 1 goal whenever i get to dive cali

Ditto. That shark is badass. You in a dry suit or just 7mm? I would love to log some dives out there. That shot is real interesting with the lighting from the hand light.

7mm was good enough really. I was offered a dry suit, but want to get comfortable in a wet suite since that is what I will be using most the time. I have a lot of underwater film shoots coming up and hope to become much more agile in the wet suite before changing things up. Need to master my buoyancy control first.jason folt wrote:Ditto. I'm calling them "Congos" from now on. I dig the first newt pic and the Horned shark.
Read the book "Big year." Outstandingly intruiging...especially the Attu island stuff.

Cool. I figured you were in a 7 if you just learned to dive. I have logged a few dives over the years, but I am always working on keeping that buoyancy dialed in. Adding a big underwater camera rig really throws you off at first. My air consumption also sky rockets when I bring my camera. I have to really work on staying focused and calm when shooting underwater. I haven't tackled the dry suit yet either. Diving rocks...
