On a similar vein, how about we try RUDDY next.

I'll start with a somewhat obscure Ruddy Woodcreeper from Chiapas and leave some of the easier north american Ruddy's for others.

Of course the R photo I was eager to post is also a RTHA with snake prey, but Owen's puts mine to shame, so maybe it is best that I didn't get the chance... Fantastic shot, Owen!

And I don't have anything Ruddy to offer up... so I'll sit here on the sidelines and enjoy the show!

Well, Frank - It is obvious that you need to make a trip down here... I can put you on a ruddy turnstone with no problem...

I had meant to post a ruddy duck, but I found a ruddy turnstone shot first...

One of my favorite photos to share would be a Caroling Wren but I think it can only be played when the game is 3-of-a-kind (or Alphabirding). I'm running out of options but here comes...

European Starling

I hope some of you world travelers can play this out. I sure can't guarantee it won't get stuck. Best of luck, shutterbugs... er... shutterbirds.

Seems appropriately seasonal at least. ;)
And if someone has a photograph of a wild Carolina Parakeet, I think more than just the members of this forum might want to see it!

I'll leave the widespread introduced "Eurasian" species in the US for someone else since I don't have a good photo, and go with

Oh, yeah....my bad on the last one as well. European Nuthatch is no longer the correct name. It is supposed to be Eurasian Nuthatch now.

Bueller?

There are at least 28 more possible species - more or less all common and widespread on this side of the pond one is even widespread in the US and another locally established. Won't someone wrap this up and move us on?

OK, here's a really common introduced species in the US -

Eurasian Collared Dove

Image

When I started birding, this species was non-existant in Texas, or really anywhere except a few isolated feral pops in FL.
Now they are among the most common Columbiform birds in parts of the US. :(

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Let's try BUFF next. Remember hyphenated Buff names are OK.

I'll avoid the US stuff for now start with another Ecuadorian Hummer

Buff-winged Starfrontlet (stupid name!)

I guess so, since there are only nine "Buffy" birds worldwide and none of them occur in the US. We aren't likely to do "Buffy" as a separate group.
There are 20+ Buff- birds.
I thing Bufflehead should be off limits for this group though.

That's funny. When you posted that question I thought "what? does he have a Buffy Fish-Owl photo?"....

Seem stuck on this one. There are 60 birds whose name starts with Buff, but only two (wait make that four!) US species that meet this category.
There are 7 Buffy birds (I miscounted earlier), but none in the US.

Here's probably the least common of the US species -

Buff-collared Nightjar - San Blas, Nayarit, Mexico.

Or, if you don't have Avisys, you can go to Ebird.org, click Explore Data, choose Range and Point Maps, then start typing a name into the Species box. Ebird will automatically offer suggestions that contain/start with that name.

Here's where you type the name in - http://ebird.org/ebird/map/

For North American birds, this site has names listed alphabetically - http://bna.birds.cornell.edu/bna/species

BTW - here's what we have so far (alphabetized)...

American
Black
Blue
Brown
Buff(y)
California
Cassin's
Common
Eastern
Eurasian
European
Golden
Great
Greater
Least
Northern
Red
Ruddy
South(ern)
Western
White
Yellow

After we get done with Brown, we can expand the game to include the second hyphenated word as your challenge as well, so you could call -winged as your challenge and people could post Golden-winged Warber or Green-winged Teal.

But let's get three more Browns first.

Actually, right as I posted it today I thought...Hmm...that bird looks like a Western to me. Truth is when I was photographing I had hoped it was a Western but I looked at it pretty good and called it Cassin's. I had seen a bunch of both in the previous few days (Texas Panhandle).

Just in case, I posted a different (lousy) shot.
