Help IDing some Australian brown snakes

Post by danh »

I was wondering if someone could help me out with these two brown snakes. Both were found near Roxby Downs, South Australia, and I can't tell whether they're Pseudonaja mendengi or P. aspidoryncha.

Snake #2:

Both photos by Angus Kennedy.

#2 definitely looks like P. aspidorhyncha, judging from the very strap-like rostral. Not so sure about # 1. Idon't suppose yougot to see the inside of the mouth of either snake? P. aspidorhyncha has a white buccal lining, whereas that of P. mengdeni is black.

I'd go with P. mengdeni for #1 and P. aspidorhyncha for #2.
