Couple Utah Lizard ID's?

Post by bushmaster W30 »

Anyone from Utah care to ID a few lizards please? All are from Uintah county. I'm here for a few months for work from Arkansas so right now all these lizards look the same to me ;) .

I agree with those IDs.
You should be able find Sceloporus graciosus, too. Maybe aim a little higher in elevation, for those.

Thanks for the Id's guys. I've been watching for short horned lizards without success. Any techniques? I've just been looking around ant mounds during the day. Looks like records for Uintah county are slim in NAFHA guess i need to take time to enter some. So far my Utah list is as follows.

Desert striped whipsnake-DOR
Gopher Snake-Cruised
Midget Faded Rattlesnake-DOR
Great Basin Rattlesnake-DOR (Utah county)
Wandering Garter snake-Flipped
Eastern Fence lizard-Bask
Side-blotched Lizard-Bask
Platuea Striped Whiptail-Cruised
Sagebrush lizard-Bask
Ornate Tree lizard-Bask
Woodhouse Toad-Cruised
Nothern Leopard Frog

Utah is an awesome change from herping back home in Arkansas.

You're in a great area for finding cool stuff bushmaster . It is one of my favorite areas of Utah.
It can be very slow but the finds are worth it.
This week and the weekend should be a great time to road cruise after dark.
PM me and I can maybe help you out with some suggestions.

For live whipsnakes and horned lizards go cruising in the morning down some of the many less traveled oil / gas roads to find them basking on the road.

Are you sure your Plateau striped whiptail wasn't a Western Whiptail?
I believe I have seen them Plateu striped whiptails out there before along the green river but they aren't really documented out there and I wasn't really paying too much attention at the time. Get a picture and post it.

Thanks for the info on cruising the oil/gas roads. I'll pm you later. As for the whiptail its possible it was a western but its stripes were more defined. I'm no expert on all of you guys lizards tho. I'll try to get some photo vouchers as soon as i find a place i can pick up a charger for the ol D7000. Guess i forgot it in arkansas may have to make a run to the nearest best buy.

Looks like my short herping season here in Utah is done for this year. I'll be moving onto Longmont, Co before long but hopefully work will bring me back next year. Thanks to all the Utah guys who have helped me out. Turns out Best Buys are kinda scarce so all photo's to follow are crappy cell pics. Sorry.
