Some pics from my friend's trip to Belize, posted for ID.
Love the knowledge on the forum!
Some of them seem obvious, but sometimes I think I know it and then the crowdsourcing reveals it to be something close, but slightly different.
Plus you never know when a regional variant of something has been split into a new species, and only the people up on the literature can tell you.
Thanks!
Warren

Re: Belize ID request?
Thanks for the info so far, guys!
After looking here, I'm pretty sure Turtle 3 is a Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas).
Assuming everyone is correct, we're still looking for Lizard 9, and Frogs 1,3,4,5.

Re: Belize ID request?
Is Gehyra really native to Belize???Gluesenkamp wrote:Lizard #1 = Gehyra sp.
i guess Thecadactylus rapicauda or some introduced Hemidactylus sp..
Re: Belize ID request?
Lizard 9 is probably same species as Lizard 1, and pretty sure it isnt any Gehyra sp. More likely one of the species I just mentioned.
Re: Belize ID request?
OK, now I have a field guide in hand…
Lizard 5: Possibly adult female Anolis sagrei
Lizard 6: Anolis lemurinus (sometimes classified as Norops lemurinus) -- A. cupreus doesn’t seem to make it that far north
Lizard 7: Sphaerodactylus glaucus
Lizard 9: Hemidactylus frenatus (I think)
Frog 1: juvenile Rhinella marina
Frog 3: Scinax staufferi?
Frog 4: Smilisca sp., probably Smilisca baudinii
Frog 5: Hyla microcephala?

Re: Belize ID request?
OK here's my take without my field guide....
Lizard 1 - Hemidactylus frenatus
Lizard 2 - Ctenosaura similis
Lizard 3 - Iguana iguana
Lizard 4 - Iguana iguana
Lizard 5 - Anolis tropidonotus
Lizard 6 - Anolis lemurinus
Lizard 7 - Sphaerodactylus sp.?
Lizard 8 - Basiliscus vittatus
Lizard 9 - Hemidactylus mabouia (???)
Lizard 10 - Ameiva (either festiva or undulata - I don't remember how to tell them apart)
Snake - Thamnophis marcianus praeocularis
Frog 1 - Juvie toad. Pattern suggests Incilius campbelli (or maybe valliceps???) - could even be a juvie marina, but I've never seen a juvie marina with that much pattern.
Frog 2 - Rhinella marina
Frog 3 - Scinax staufferi
Frog 4 - Smilisca baudinii
Frog 5 - Tlalcohyla loquax (??) tough to tell, particular without a size reference. This frog is not "petite" enough to be microcephala.
Turtle 1 and 2 - Trachemys venustus
Croc - Crocodylus acutus (or maybe moreletii - I don't remember the difference. Looks like acutus to me)
Lizard 1 - Hemidactylus frenatus
Lizard 2 - Ctenosaura similis
Lizard 3 - Iguana iguana

It's morlettii, acutus has a more elongated snout.chrish wrote:Croc - Crocodylus acutus (or maybe moreletii - I don't remember the difference)

#7: Sphaerodactylus glaucus
#9: Just a darker Hemidactylus frenatus

Re: Belize ID request?
I agree with 1 looking live frenatus, but 9 looks like garnotii to me. Then again, I've only seen them on Hawai'i vacations years ago. Funny how those get around.chrish wrote:OK here's my take without my field guide....

Re: Belize ID request?
Julian Lee’s “A Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of the Maya World” has a photo of a juvie R. marina (called Bufo marinus in the book) that’s got a somewhat similar pattern -- even more patterned, but somewhat blotchier. That’s what leaned me towards R. marina, though I agree it could be one of the other local toads.chrish wrote: Frog 1 - Juvie toad. Re: Belize ID request?
I think most of the stuff has been correctly IDed at this point, let us know what's missing... the juvie toad looks like a juvie marinus to me, I see them often here with that pattern.
