That's awesome. I showed my sister and she's saying, "Poor guy, he's probably getting really frustrated that he's not getting any."

Re: BREAKTHROUGH! Lizard Playing Video Games!
That's just mean. It would be like someone holding a slice of pepperoni pizza just out of reach and you're hungry and can't grab it; like Tantalus in Hell. At least if they do experiments like this with animals in a scientific setting, they eventually get rewarded with positive reinforcement ( they would get an actual bug to eat) to encourage them to continue the behavior. The frog had the right idea
The cool thing about birds is they wouldn't fall for this tease for as long. They would figure out after a few tries that the mission is pointless. That's why I like birds, too. They learn so fast!

Re: BREAKTHROUGH! Lizard Playing Video Games!
Since I've seen a similar video showing a toad "playing" this game, I'm skeptical about the veracity of this flick. Do lizards really go for two-dimensional ants with no smell?
Re: BREAKTHROUGH! Lizard Playing Video Games!
I'm confused, why would the frog video cause you to doubt the veracity of the lizard video?Hans Breuer (twoton) wrote:Since I've seen a similar video showing a toad "playing" this game, I'm skeptical about the veracity of this flick. Do lizards really go for two-dimensional ants with no smell?
FWIW, I've owned the same species of frog, and that thing would try to attack water whenever I poured it into his bowl. They're opportunistic predators, they're not discerning, and they're not incredibly smart.

Re: BREAKTHROUGH! Lizard Playing Video Games!
It was not this frog video. It was a video of a South American Horned Toad. So my recking was "one's a fluke, but two's a fake"jonathan wrote:I'm confused, why would the frog video cause you to doubt the veracity of the lizard video?Hans Breuer (twoton) wrote:Since I've seen a similar video showing a toad "playing" this game, I'm skeptical about the veracity of this flick. OK, riddle solved. Thanks!FWIW, I've owned the same species of frog, and that thing would try to attack water whenever I poured it into his bowl. They're opportunistic predators, they're not discerning, and they're not incredibly smart.

Re: BREAKTHROUGH! Lizard Playing Video Games!
Hans: if you notice, the beardie does try to "taste' the ant images with its tongue in the attempt to pick up odors or taste. But it's limbic brain is convinced that this is actual prey items because the motion alone of the graphics satisfies it enough to meet the criteria. Most predators that rely on sight (like most lizards and colubrids) are triggered strongly by motion. I knew of an incident where the owner managed to get an indigo snake to grab and swallow cherry tomatoes simply by rolling the fruit across the floor in front of the snake.Hans Breuer (twoton) wrote:Since I've seen a similar video showing a toad "playing" this game, I'm skeptical about the veracity of this flick. It's not much different than a cat chasing a laser pointer. They can't smell it, they can't taste it, and they can't feel it, but they will chase it none the less.

Re: BREAKTHROUGH! Lizard Playing Video Games!
I've owned both horned frogs and african bull frogs (the bull frog died in a house fire ). I can easily see them both doing this, they're very similar animals behaviorally. It was not this frog video. It was a video of a South American Horned Toad. So my recking was "one's a fluke, but two's a fake"
