Nevada Bioblitz 18-22 May 2017

Post by s_stocking »

Nevada Dept of Wildlife (NDOW) is sponsoring a Bioblitz at the new Gold Butte National Monument and the Virgin Mountains 18-22 May. The site of base camp is TBD, but there are no camping facilities on the peninsula or in the Virgin Mountains, so plan for primitive camping. There are hotels and RV camping in Mesquite, NV for those who choose to commute.

The goal is to contribute to a species list for the new National Monument. The area varies from low elevation Mojave desert scrub along Lake Mead to 5000 ft+ mountains on the peninsula (Jumbo Peak, Mica Peak, Bonelli Peak), to 8500 ft+ in the Virgin Mountains. The Western Diamondback (Crotalus atrox) has been documented on the Arizona side of Lake Mead but not on the Nevada side. Also the Gila monster would be highly desired to document additional individuals/locations.

Details on permitting and base camp location are forthcoming-

Due to scheduling conflicts and shifting priorities the Gold Butte Bioblitz is cancelled. We are looking to schedule an event there this fall. We are working on a Bioblitz mid-May in the Amargosa Valley in Nye county; details forthcoming-

Cheers,
Steve
