Went herping today but saw more mammals than herps

Post by herpseeker1978 »

Went out today to look for smooth greens and found more mammals than herps, in fact just got one fence lizard. We drove up and found a nice spot and it will probably produce once it rains. We were driving by the Valles Caldera http://www.vallescaldera.gov/ and saw a cow elk standing in the road. We slowed down and she ran up to the left, so my wife took a picture of her:

We also saw a calf on the other side. At first I thought it was caught in the barbed wire, but then it dropped to the ground:

It was just trying to blend in!

We continued to a nice pond I knew of and were hoping to find some garters out or some salamander larvae in the pond. Struck out, but did see this:

There were also some wildflowers blooming that my wife photographed.

We then moved on to Jemez Falls and came up with nothing on the herps, but found some nice scenery:

Thanks for looking! At least I got some scouting for spots done!

Nice post. It's been too long since I've seen either of those mammals.
