Baby Southern Flying Squirrel.
Woodchuck that retreated about 30' up a tree.
These were being saved for the mammal topic on the main forum, but I wanted to be first here.

Re: First...
People think I am crazy when I tell them I find groundhogs up in trees.
Re: First...
Neat. I've never seen a flying squirrel...nor have I seen a woodchuck climb.

Don, that is the highest up a tree I have ever seen a Groundhog, especially a straight vertical tree. Usually I see them in bushes or on a heavily angled tree.
Jared, Flying Squirrels are awesome, I don't see nearly enough of them. But they are common.

I've seen them up pretty high. I have only ever scared one up a tree, and really my dog did that. In recent years, as I am hiking, I will hear a noise and look up, and one is just relaxing in the branches above my head. The first time I saw it, I was walking with my brother a week later, and telling him about it. He thought I was nuts, and then I heard a munching sound, looked up, and there was on in the trees above us. I see them sitting in the trees a few times a year now.

Re: First...
Woodchucks are highly underrated, in my opinion
Re: First...
I've seen several groundhogs up in the canopy. It's a common sight when you're deer hunting in Missouri woods. I find they prefer trees that are hollow. They climb up as far as they can on the inside and suddenly pop out of a hole as close to the top as they can get.
