Gerry, gbin wrote:Are you sure on that ID, Andy? The animal in your picture looks more like a mink to me, and the setting seems more like where one would encounter a mink, too. Positive on the ID. The area was a vast open field/prairie, the weasel had a little short tail, a complete white belly (not just white spotting on the chin and throat) and it (along with it's mate) was only 6" long.

Here is a little Tricolored Bat (Perimyotis subflavus) where i used to work as a cave guide in college. Not a great quality photo, sorry. I always enjoyed seeing these little guys.

Hoary Bats do not hibernate in caves, nor do I even think they hibernate at all. They migrate south.

Our Hoarys are supposed to winter in Mexico. That one was in a cave in Southern Indiana in January. Unless you think it's something else, but what else could it be?Andy Avram wrote:Hoary Bats do not hibernate in caves, nor do I even think they hibernate at all. They migrate south.

Re: OT - The great mammal thread!
Red Bats, which like Hoary Bats are in the genus Lasiurus, and migrate south. If cold weather hits while migrating they just plunge into the leaf litter and wait for reasonable weather. There is some evidence they hibernate under the leaf litter too. Either way not a cave species. Hoary Bats are also huge, noticeably bigger than other bats you will see, and have a different colored head than the body.Marty Whalin wrote:Our Hoarys are supposed to winter in Mexico. That dew covered bat is hard to tell. Tri-colored Bats (formerly E. Pipistrelles) are known to commonly become dew covered if hibernating away from a group, but their arms are pink. Your bat's arms are black. I would call it is Myotis sp. of some sort, Little Brown, E. Small-footed, Northern, etc... Looks too small to be a Big Brown Bat, which should be your only option outside of Myotis.

Re: OT - The great mammal thread!
The first pic looks like a cluster of Indiana's. The second photo looks like a Tricolor (the new name for the Pipistrelle) but like stated above, the forearms dont seem to be the right color. That said, maybe the angle, lighting etc. makes the forearm color appear different. It would be alot easier to ID with a size comparison of some kind. I would agree it is some type of myotis, probably a Little Brown or Pip.

Long-tailed Weasel with prey, Glacier National Park.
Thanks Andy and Dell. Andy, I just got back from Africa, so it could be a while until I take off again. I'll let you know though.
The Tiger was in the "wild", one of the major Tiger parks. I'll do a full post on it sometime. I'm going to take it slow with the mammal posts. Maybe one a week or so. I'm not sure when I'll get to that one.

Dell,,,,,, a badger……. ……….. Really
I mean ………………………………. Really……
We don’t need no stinking badgers.
In NW FL, an out building that looked like this,
And had a target animal under the board in the foreground,
Also had this coon in the rafters.

Curtis that Shrew shot is nice, and it reminded me of the Water Shrew I found as kid. I took it to my science teacher in Junior high, who went a little crazy over it, slapping me on the back. He made me feel like I'd found a lost species, he loved it.
