ID of gorgeous beetle- San Mateo County, CA

A gorgeous beetle few onto my shirt today while I was hiking to one of my rattlesnake spots in San Mateo County. I have never seen a beetle so colorful and vivid, with stunning gold flecks in its jewel-like exoskeleton.

I am upset that I could not get a decent photograph of this insect, as once I took a picture, it flew away.

Can anyone identify this insect?

California is exceedingly rich with beetles! I fell in love with my previous roommates beetle book An Introduction To California Beetles. Authur Evans,.

I was hoping he would let me have the book but no way jose.

The author writes that he had to call the book 'An Introduction . .' Because the world of beetles in CA is so vast.

Truly that guy is a gem! I hope someone identifies it, I want to know too .
