Bean weevils(Callosobruchus)

Post by Joseph S. »

How many people have dealt with these?

I phased out my cultures as nothing I keep was super gung-ho about them(small darts and small phelsuma)

I see a lot of promise for these to replace pinhead/small crickets given to lizards that are ant specialists. I've given extras to a friends bearded dragon-amusing to watch a 2ft long lizard lap up the little buggers as fast as it can.

Probably rank as the easiest live food to deal with as well.

(further details can be obtained via google)

Thoughts?

Interesting, I know I've run into the grain weevils, they can be a seasonal nuisance in seed mills and historically man, bird people really get upset about them but they seem pretty clean. When I've had them between my fingers if theyre the same guys, they feel very firm and didnt strike me as meaty, but what else did you find liked them?

Ah, yes, grain weevils. I toyed briefly with the idea of using those as feeders but their unfortunate habit of playing dead and crawling and breeding about as fast as molasses sunk that idea quickly.

Larger dart frogs love them too. I think just about anything that eats ants in the wild would enjoy these things. They run around like headless chickens too. A few folks I gave cultures to also fed them to small-medium chameleons-esp. stuff like baby panthers and veiled chams they could be useful. I had only moderate success with feeding these to pygmy chameleons-some individuals would hold out for crickets. They are indeed very chitiny/crunchy-not as much as the grain weevils though.

Aah, ok yeah , I have seen them in cereal, and they are tinier than the other weevils and run around like ice skaters I think most every one has accidently ate cereal that had those guys.

Yes I could see how they would be good for little guys, like my bumblebees :D

Bean weevils are different. Google em. They are not household pests.

Cool. Got more acquainted. Just to clarify though i wasn't implying that, i don't really ascribe to Pests. More like Personality Clashes between cultures. Haha. I had a recent one with thief ants that waned mysteriously, as if they just moved along. Wierd.
