My Year to Date (Panama, East TX, & LA) DUW

Post by gretzkyrh4 »

It’s been a hectic year so far and I’ve yet to find much time to post my finds, so here’s a little mix of everything to add to the forum rebuild.

Headed to Panama in January to get married, but with a few forum members on the guest list I was guaranteed at least a little time in the field. Two nights afterwards (with my new bride still nursing a hangover from the reception that went till near sunrise) I headed into the hills around El Valle with VanAR and local herper Mario. We did pretty well.

Cochranella sp. (?)

A little canal zone herping the following morning would have been great had we not had most of our stuff stolen from the rental car (sorry Van!).
We did manage this guy though.

Back in the states, work kept me out of the field till early April. Once things calmed down though, I made the most of it.
Here’s a little from East TX to start.

Heterodon platirhinos

Farancia abacura

Crotalus horridus (not the way I wanted to see my first Timber)

And to finish it off here are a few recent shots from closer to home in Louisiana.

Nerodia clarkii

Lampropeltis getula

Agkistrodon piscivorus

And some random inverts

Hope everyone enjoyed.

Thanks Van. I'm hoping to try and put together a group trip back down next spring/summer if you're interested in heading back down.

Nice pics Chris. I really like that Oxybelis. We need to make it out to Kisatchie some time soon.

that's one of the prettier cottonmouths I've seen.
Any idea what those bump's purpose is on the mouths of those Bolitoglossa? I've never seen that on a salamander before

Those are nasolabial grooves- most Plethodontid salamanders have them, but they may or may not be visible without magnification. It plays a role in chemical senses, either olfaction or taste, but I'm not sure to what degree.

Thanks Guys!

John - Wish I could. I'm pretty strapped for time at the moment, so not sure on that. At the least, we'll have to get out locally one of these weekends.

Van - Hopefully you'll have a little vacation time by that point.

The ants were enjoying the remains of a large catepillar I found along the edge of a boardwalk trail.
