Hello Ecto, I respect your willingness to remove your photograph as well as your willingness to take (somewhat unfriendly and poorly delivered) criticism well. Many times people enter into this community without foreknowledge of what's appropriate and what's inappropriate to post publicly so you're certainly not the first one. It's also not obvious that you posting this photo does anything to contribute to the safety or lack of safety of others, people are responsible for their own actions. Really the only valid excuses for asking you to remove your pics are predicated upon the fact that impressionalbe children view this site and that impressionable non-herping anti-herpers might get the wrong idea about the willingness of our community to embrace and advertise the more dangerous aspects of field herping through the promotion of the danger and holding venomous creatures. I say, if you want to do it, do it...but if you post, expect to get responses like you have.Ecto Hunter wrote:donegbin wrote:You'll of course be wanting to edit your post above to remove that picture, then, to avoid encouraging anyone else to do anything stupid - or even just to spare both yourself and this otherwise fine forum thread further embarrassment. Ahhhhh- I get it! Clever!
Re: Topic: herpers herping.
Joe, Tim, and I had the pleasure of hanging out with Bill Flowers (from Tasmania) recently.
This was his first trip to the states so everything was a lifer.
He's an artist, so pretty much every snake we found he'd whip out the sketch pad and do his thing.
It was amazing to watch how quickly he could draw the snake in front of him.
Sketching a very small viridis.
Bill and Joe with a Colorado Masticophis flagellum.
Sketching the coach.
He was kicked out of a local restaurant down in SE Colorado b/c of his shirt. Sheesh.

Well, this is an OLD photo of a very-well known herper taken about 36 years ago as he uses an English-Spanish dictionary to communicate with one of the locals in the boonies of Colima, Mexico.
Anyone care to identify him?
Sorry about the quality of the photo....The years have taken a toll on its quality.

Re: Topic: herpers herping.
Nice photos. I'm surprised by the lack of tripods when people are taking pics. I can't get a very good photo without one for the life of me, but perhaps digital makes it easier? I dunno. Nice pics though!

Re: Topic: herpers herping.
Going back through the years a bit, I've had the opportunity to herp with some of the best people I've ever met.
Dres, Redmer and my first 'sauga, 2003
a funny one of me from 2003, kankakee county
the late Ron Humbert, a truly inspiring guy, 2005
My wife with her first bullsnake, 2005
Ray, DaveODD and Peter knuteberg shooting a kingsnake, 2009
Mike Dloogatch, 2005
Todd (snakewrangler) with his lifer black racer, 2009
Bryan Susan and Aaron Laforge make a new friend, 2008
Aaron with two shawnee kings, 2005
Dloogatch with my first shawnee copperhead, 2005
Jenny Vollman with an armful of kings and racers, 2006. That trip was by far the most herps I've ever seen in a weekend, it was the perfect storm of herping conditions and herpers. Unfortunately I lost most of my photos - back up everything!!!!
Linda Malawy, Steve Barton, Ralph Shepstone, Jenny Vollman and Jason Hood, 2008
Justin M with our first of four shawnee timbers, 2009
DaveODD and I with a big timber, 2009
This is an awesome thread and I loved going through my old folders of herping photos, really got my blood boiling for this year's season!
Erik.

Found another one; Me carrying two Pseudopus apodus's on my trip to Croatia last spring:
Re: Topic: herpers herping.
A mate just emailed a couple of shots from herping trips which I thought would be appropriate in this thread.
This is me photographing a Varanus spenceri a couple of years ago.
One of the resulting shots
This shot was taken last year and has a funny story. In fact, I'd forgotten all about it until I saw the photo, which caused me to laugh out loud.
We were on Cape York and about to go spotlighting. I had my headlamp on around the campsite and had stopped walking for a minute when I suddenly felt something crawl onto my foot. It turned out to be a gecko (pretty sure it's an Asian house gecko) that had seen my headlamp and decided that it would be a good place to find flying insects. I watched (or felt, when it was out of sight) in amusement as it made its way up my leg, torso, neck and finally the top of my head, where it proceeded to rush around chasing insects. A minute or so after my mate took these shots it must have got fed up with the flash, for it went back down and wandered off.
