Finnish adders

Post by Martti Niskanen »

Here are some photos from yesterday's trip to an adder hibernaculum. Found two males, the other one a big, >60cm one.

Damn, I really like those pics with the male stretched on the conifer with all the snow! That must be a welcomed sight after a harsh winter!

Mmm, I think I'm going to introduce some V. berus here in Quebec. Probably the only venomous which would stand the weather. It would make for some interesting herping! Mouahahah

Props goes to you.
Great pics and some great snakes, especially the spider on the snake's head pic.

Great post!

@Nir: I checked the climate data for Jyväskylä v. Sherbrooke and Jyväskylä is colder! Sherbrooke reaches a lower temp in the winter, but under the snow it's always around zero anyway. So in terms of climate, you're right - berus could survive. Great Florida post too. Glad you guys escaped the frozen hell.

GREAT photos! I hadn't found this post yet when I was suggesting that your pal in the video take some still photos exactly like the ones in your post. Perfect shots!

Great shots. The first two really show how tough and resilient these beautiful snakes are.
Thanks for sharing.

A quick follow-up. Made a quick visit to the site today. The weather's been really nice since the first trip and the snow has gone down quite well. Found seven individuals in less than an hour, including the two in the photos above. Also, there was already a female out.

The weather will stay nice, so it wont be long till the males shed, turn blue and start wrestling.

Happy days.

These are some enormously cool adder shots! It's so interesting to see them out in the snow. Cool stuff!

A gorgeous snake with the most terrifying face ever haha!
Excellent photos. So crazy to see pictures of snakes and snow, well except for those odd ball rubber boas...
