Eastern Hognose in Ontario, CANADA

Post by victor »

Hi guys,
although I'm not very active on fieldherp, I read most of the posts that appear on this forum. I'm actually often jealous of all the species you have in the south! I'm currently doing my M.Sc. at Ottawa U. studying the eastern hognose at its most northern range here in Ontario. Although I'm doing habitat modelization I still had the chance to spend some time on the field last here. I'm actually going back on the field to remove some emitters that some of our snakes still have. So here are a couple of species we can find up here :D

My favorite species of snake in the eastern and central US (and Canada!). Glad to hear you are working on their ecology, and looking forward to hearing what you discover!

Welcome to the site, Victor. Hognoses are one of coolest Colubrids in the world, you're lucky you get to study them... I'm super jealous now as well. If it makes you feel any better, your walking sticks are way cooler than ours, which just look like half-squashed tree crickets. And that caterpillar is insane! Do you know which species it is?

Cool post. The extent of my Canadian herping has been nothing more than Northwestern garters in British Columbia. The last hog is nice.

Natalie, I have those big real walking sticks here too. I found some doing the deed...

There are few studies looking at hognose. Because the species does not seem to be as common as before in most of its range, things will change. Yes Natalie hognose are cool culubrids I agree :D Our stick insects are pretty cool as well but that caterpillar blew my mind! Does anyone know what it is?

Great shots of hognose! Say it looks like you have a wood tick above the eye on a hognose?
