I believe they are a type of Sphynx Moth. I also believe that they are really common and impressive certain times of the year. They also have a huge range.

Daniel, I believe #3 is a Wild Cherry Sphinx (Drupiferarum). Vashti is not found in WI. On the other hand, they are pretty strong fliers...
Thanks,
Tim

Edit: Nice job on the Ash and Laurel! :thumb:

How good are you in ID'ing obscure cloud formations in paleo-arctic regions? (Just kidding.)
Thanks, and I'll leave you alone now.

I'm glad you're kidding, that would stretch me a little.

Here's one for you...if you'd like to ID.

Both photos, same spider. Found near St. Augustine and photographed yesterday.

I say: Purse web.
(If that's wrong, and I could buy another vowel, I'd have to go with Trap door.)
Great looking spider (and photos) by the way!

Yes, you may buy a vowel...Trapdoor (Ummidia) male.

Take care. I hope to meet you in the field some day soon.

While you guys are IDing spiders, do you have an idea on this one. Looks similar to the one above but not as hairy. Found in NC.

They're gorgeous. (Send an involuntary shudder up my spine, but gorgeous nonetheless.)
How big are they? They certainly are sturdy little critters.
Thanks for sharing.

Daniel, you never explained search method...I'll happily take the "in a nut shell" version if/when you get the time. Thanks, too.
