Re: Your All-time Best Rattlesnake Shot!
I think this has to be my favorite. For one thing, it is my favorite rattlesnake, the Eastern Diamondback. And for another, it was taken at extremely close range because this little cutie was only interested in basking, and did not particularly mind my presence.
Re: Your All-time Best Rattlesnake Shot!
I've always like this atrox shot. The tail is distracting, but it is still one of my favorite rattlesnake shots.

Re: Your All-time Best Rattlesnake Shot!
This has been my desktop wallpaper for a while now... I actually stepped on this snake. I don't mean I stepped near it, or briefly on it while I walked over it. I mean, I placed about the front three inches of both my boots right on top of this snake, and stood on it for a bit before we noticed it. It never struck, hissed, or rattled.

Strictly from aesthetics it may have been better w/o the stick, but OTOH the picture is still gorgeous and the stick adds some realism to it.gretzkyrh4 wrote:This was always one of my favorites. Just wish the stick hadn't been in the way.

This is a favorite more for the memories than the quality of the pic. I suck with the old camera so I am gonna go with that criteria instead.

I have a few, the first being my favorite, but the others are honorable mentions.
Northern pacific
spit bubbles
I like how the rattle made this sw speck reminded me of "The thinker"
My lifer and only pigmy from the ozarks, but it was a stunner.
Too many I could post, but these are my favorite 4 from the past year.

I don't get to see crotalus often. Well, it had been 8 years before this spring Crotalus viridis from Alberta.

Re: Your All-time Best Rattlesnake Shot!
I recently ran across this in an abandoned/over grown parking lot. The pic has an almost cryptic feel to it and shows how adept they can be at disappearing in a few tufts of grass. (Heck, she's even camoflaged against herself.) Being the most recent I've found, I guess by default, it's my fav.

This shot was taken in Macon, co. AL. She was under a piece of tin at noon when the temp was at least 90. She had just shed and I'm thinking she may have been raising her body temp as she may have been gravid.
This EDB was crossing a forest road in ANF.

bgorum, your NM atrox shot is a standout so far. Simply a beautiful photo.
I don't know if this is my single best rattlesnake shot, but this is one of my favorites because it is uncropped and totally in situ. The snake was basking on a quiet south Texas dirt road so I layed in front of it with a 300mm lens and took its portrait.

I like the lighting on this one (dusk, with car headlights adding some highlights).

I'm waiting for that long tailed rattlesnake picture that was on the cover of the journal. That was my favorite pic of the year.

Re: Your All-time Best Rattlesnake Shot!
Only one canebrake pic so far?
I think that I may have a couple edb shots I like a little better from a technical perspective, but I like something about the way the rattle and face are lined up here. Also, the animal itself was my first wild canebrake, and still one of my favorite field herping finds.

Hard to choose favourites amongst my masses of photos, but I guess right now it stands to reason my current favourite would be between these most recent two:
Cerastes from Harquahalas in AZ,
Speckled from South Mtn., Phoenix.

Re: Your All-time Best Rattlesnake Shot!
I like this in-situ shot so much that I had it printed and framed. Snake was found by our herping group in the Mojave desert last year.
Here are some memorable encounters and animals as well.
Not the best pic but simply the nicest C.v.oreganus that I've found ever. Yes, is that lime green in person.
Another so-so pic of an amazing looking specimen.
Natural behavior is always cool. "Yeah baby! It's sexy-time!"
Some unorthodox behaviors should count as well. A confused and arboreal C.c.cerastes.
This West-Coast Crote reminds me of one from the east.
You will always remember the biggest one you've seen. Here's mine.
