Lifer spadefoot

Post by Matt J »

True story. I was walking in the woods the other night and I stopped to pull my hip boots up before walking through dense shrubs. I set my flashlight down and the light shown directly on an adult spadefoot, just sitting out on the leaf litter. The epitome of dumb luck but I'll take it. I have seen metamorphs before but this is my first adult, and the first one I got pics of. Pretty cool to watch it start digging into the leaf litter backwards when I was done.

Cool dorsal pattern

After I got home I realized I didn't really take many pics, too tired and lazy I suppose. Here's a leopard frog sitting awkwardly on the base of a tree:

And a crappy calling Cope's gray treefrog shot:

Thanks for lookin.

I have seen a bunch of metamorphs, but I will count an adult as a lifer too once I find one. So now I'm gonna walk the woods and start putting my flashlight down randomly because nothing else has worked so far. :)

Yeah, I think I may patent that search technique. After that though I hunted down every Fowler's I heard hopping, just incase it was a spadefoot, those tricksters.

Awesome! I got my lifer spadefoot adult (well, sub-sdult, but close enough) last weekend too! I remember how we were both hoping but failed to see a spadefoot at Delmarva.

Congrats. I also hoped for a spadefoot on the trip. One of the nights we cruised I counted 101 fowler's toads, hoping for just 1 spadefoot. Better luck next time I suppose.
