Hey All

I'm Dave Weber
2013 Chapter President

Welcome to the Arizona Chapter. Please tell us about yourself and include a photo of your self if you would be so kind so we can tell who we meet in the field!

M-F I am a truck driver for FedEx Freight. The rest of the time I am either in the pool consuming adult beverages, herping, riding motorcycles, or doing yard work (notice I put that one last).

I do have a few herps here at home, but I prefer seeing them in the wild.

Here is my ugly mug....

Hi all;
My name is Brian and I own a small ( for now ) live reptile museum called Tombstone Reptile Exhibit in historic Tombstone, Az. My main focus is to showcase the native species of venomous and non-venomous snakes, lizards, scorpions and tarantulas of Arizona and the desert southwest. I already know and have met a few of the members here, and hope to meet many more of you in the future. To answer what will be asked so you don't have to, yes the Gila in my avatar is on display @ my exhibit and yes I do have the special lic. to have and exhibit an H. suspectum suspectum. That's enough about me for now and I hope to meet and shoot the sh** and do some herping with some of you.

Hey Brian

Glad to have you around.

You wouldnt happen to know Christian who used to be in Tombstone who had/ or was starting a herp museum down there last year. I haven't seen or heard from him in awhile.

Anyway, I'm sure we will run into each other soon.

Christian didn't know ( and never bothered to check to see) there was an existing exhibit in town and his never got off the ground. He moved to Phoenix in early spring and I haven't seen him since.

Hi Brian,

I was just in Tombstone for a couple of days while on a herping trip. On the last day, just as I was leaving for Tucson to catch a plane, I heard about your reptile exhibit in town. I was totally disappointed that I didn't hear about it sooner so that I could have checked out your place and great animals.

I should be back in town soon. My dad has always dreamed of visiting Tombstone so I am gonna try to bring him down there. He currently lives in Nevada so not too bad. In addition, he has always wanted to see atrox and cerastes in the wild so that will hopefully be part of my present to him. Fortunately, they are pretty easy targets, it's not like he picked willardi and pricei. Those are my lofty goals... someday.

Anyway, I will definitely not pass through Tombstone again without visiting your museum.

While I am not from AZ, I do post here and enjoy the discussion so I figured I would introduce myself.

I live in northern CA currently. I did live in AZ for a while, Camp Verde and Cottonwood. I also spent seven years in Hawaii, which is very light on snakes but has a few interesting herps.

I am an avid photographer with herps being my main focus but I do shoot other things. I do not collect any animals from the wild. I keep two herps, both CB by a very reputable dealer (Chris Baubel)... one male Lampropeltis mexicana thayeri (Leonis) and one female Lampropeltis pyromelana pyromelana (Santa Rita line from 1989).

I am aware than Arizonans are sensitive about herpers and completely understand why. I do travel down to AZ for herping but assure you that I am very respectful, collect nothing (except trash found in habitats), and my highest concern is for the welfare of the animals and environment. I am very passionate about the protection of the incredible wildlife found in your beautiful state and it worries me that my kids may not someday be able to see some of the threatened species, so conservation is a high priority to me.

Well, that's a bit about me, here are a couple of pics.

Hi, Craig!

Posting pics is, ok, most of the time. Just the habit of posting everything, right after finding stuff, especially if giving some locality info, is the problem we seem to be having.

Your pic of the Sonoran Desert Toad is no problem. You didn't say when you found it, or where, and it's not one of the problem species, that being species that we're trying to protect or might bring an overload to a certain spot.

PS: I'm just trying to arbitrate this mess, so people will keep posting, but not stuff that will irritate the other herpers who post here.

Cheers...Terry

Hi, all... :D

Terrence (Terry) Cox here, AKA...TC. I live in Green Valley, Pima County, AZ. I've been the AZ Chapter President from 2009-2010, but I don't plan to run again. We need some fresh blood to keep this Chapter going. I do plan to help with the forum and help moderate and maybe hold the position of Education Specialist.

Happy to meet any NAFHA members that visit my area and will get out once in awhile. I tend to work in my yard a lot and try to create habitat for herps and birds. Also spend a lot of time on my collection, mostly a few kinds of N. A. ratsnakes, and travel quite a bit. I don't go herping as much as I used to..getting older (retired)..but make several trips a year, including most of the AZ Chapter outings. Not very good at vertical hiking, so probably won't be going to any high elevations. I concentrate on desert and low-level herps.

I think NAFHA is a good place for folks to learn about herps, and the AZ Chapter is in position to add to the knowledge of herpetology in AZ, not to mention having the ability to do conservation and educational work. This "thing" about posting on the forum, however, has been a problem for the Chapter. All through our two years of existence there's been debates and discussions about what's good to post and what's not. Also, there's the problem of whether folks should have a license to do certain things, and the problem of poachers out there, and the problem of inconsiderates (meaning anyone who disrespects the herps and habitats). Many AZ herpers and others who visit regularly are very tight-lipped, because they don't want to say anything that might add to the confusion. However, many posts are innocuous, and I don't want to discourage posting.

I think the main point at this time is..."not to post anything controversial, especially during the main activity period of the year...waiting for an off-season to post anything that might draw too much attention to an area, a particular herp, or a time period when the herps should be left alone."

Talking about problems is not a favorite thing of mine, but it comes with the territory. Here's a couple old mug shots...

Hi,
I am Aaron and live in the Idaho desert with my awesome wife. I love God, plants, herps, cars, animals, guns. I love all herps but I favor lizards most of all.
I try never to disturb any habitat when out in the wild. As some of you may know by now I am not a big fan of flipping, this could be the resone I have only ever found one night-snake and only a part of a dead ground snake. Most of what I find will be out in the open. I don't like to keep pets for to long but love to find herps around the house. When I see lizards or snake in my yard I watch from a distance, I want them to feel safe and hang around. I found a skink this year and my wife has seen them twice. Last year I only seen one lizard in the yard, but found 6 live and 2-3 dead inside the house. I found out they would come inside as we walked through the front door (seen it once)
I hope that others here will try their hand with landscaping for herps and other wildlife (Terry's place is awesome 8-) ) Good to meet everyone. :thumb:

Welcome to everyone! Terry included....

I agree with Terry, dont be afraid to post pics, just use some common sense and a little restraint.

I understand the excitement of being in a new area and wanting to share the finds and the excitement of those finds with the rest of the world.

Just count to ten (days at least)and take a couple of deep breaths ( a couple two - three weeks is better) before posting pics.

And NEVER give exact locales.

I did this once before and the server crashed so here it goes again...

My name is Kris, I'm 34 and I live in Phoenix. My primary interests are rattlesnakes, bumpy lizards and a few colubrids. I don't keep much anymore, but I've recently acquired a couple of buzzworms from a friend who had the same idea I had and largely got out of keeping altogether.

I field-herp almost every weekend and I'm pretty big into photography as well.

Happy herping.

Hello - I'm not from Arizona or in Arizona but I did manage to stop over in Arizona for some quick herping on my way out to Southern California where I am now. I am originally from New Jersey and a Northeast Chapter member but now I am back in LA. I would like to meet up with some of you guys eventually, I have a long list of lifers obviously outside of the East Coast - mostly into turtles and snakes. I do not own anything and do not collect, but I just like to photo (and I definitely need to learn better photography skills!!!). Talk to you soon!!!

Hello all you happy people, My name is Billboard.

I live in The northern most regions of San Diego Co., which is the southern most county in the Most bankrupt state in the nation. I do however, own a small, but glorious parcel of God's green acre in your fine state of Arizona. Our ranch,(so to speak) is just north of the thriving metropolis of Wikieup, Arizona. I go out there two or three times a year, to view all kinds of awesome and interesting herps, and any and all members of the Az. chapter of NAFHA are more than welcome to join us out there, just send me a p.m. I know Terry and Dave pretty well, and have had the pleasure of herping with both of them out in the field. Terry is a pretty scary guy, but Dave is as harmless as a kitten. I strongly encourage any of you who are out there lurking, to join this chapter, and actively participate in collecting data and photographs for this fine Association. I look forward to meeting some of you out in the field, and as for those of you I don't get the chance to meet, perhaps our paths will cross someday, you will know me by the path I tread, which is very straight, and very narrow.

Herp hard...........

Or go Home!

Here's a pic of me with my first indigo snake in the wilds of Texas back in 2006...

I have quite a few friends in TX and take trips there occasionally. I'm very interested in the Emory's ratsnakes in TX and their taxonomy. I keep several locality forms in my collection, which I fondly call, "Ratsnake Haven."

Here's one of my favorites from Brazos Island....
Image
I started working with him and his sweetie about seven years ago. They have since become one of my favorite pairs and given me a lot of information about Emory's ratsnakes.
Image
Brazos Island is on the TX Coast near the mouth of the Rio Grande River.

One more little cutie from La Salle County in south central TX...
Image
She's soaking in her water jug.

I also really like getting out in nature and hiking and seeing lots of interesting habitats, especially habitats that harbor new and exciting herps.

This is a scene at dusk of the horizon from the Santa Rita Mountains. Anyone recognize that distant peak?
Image
Hiking Palm Canyon in Anza Borrego with Jeff Lemm and the Southern Cal group....

Some Rocky Mountain habitat here. In case anyone is wondering, I found mtn. garters and smooth green snakes in this area...

This is an area rarely sampled by any herpers and may be sort of an intergrade zone for some herps from the west side to the east side. Mostly it has the regular Sonoran Desert species, however.

Just thought I'd share some old memories and let y'all get to know me a little better. I think we're going to have some fun in the AZ Chapter this year.

Happy New Year to all...

Hey guys,
My name is Carlos and I recently moved to AZ earlier this year after serving in the military's special operations community. I am currently getting my masters degree in Biology at NAU in flagstaff.
I guess that you could say that I was originally bitten by the herping bug and schooled in the ways of herping by billboard while I was stationed in Camp Pendleton, CA many years ago.
As far as my dayjob, I am a practicing emergency medicine PA and I own a small private military contracting company http://www.specopsts.org in which I teach firearms and emergency medicine to the US military and civilians from time to time. I keep and breed womas, magrove snakes, and boa and ball python morphs.
I love spending time in the field with my wife, daughter, and son flipping rocks and night driving for herps. I also spend tons of time fishing and bow hunting with my daughter.
Image
Image
I guess thats about it about me and my clan...oh yeah, my daughter wants to add that she loves Rosy boas and Mt Kings!!!

Carlos, very cool post. I can relate to most of what you mentioned, except I don't keep any boas, yet. That may change if one of my projects ever gets off the ground...LOL.

I can relate to bow hunting. I'm originally from Michigan and used to hunt quite a bit in that state. I no longer shoot a bow, but miss the time I spent in the woods and getting to know the animals. I do wish I had a hand gun and want to get into shooting one of those eventually.

Flagstaff is a neat area. I visited up there last year for the first time and wouldn't mind going back one of these days. I think Northern AZ has a lot to offer to us as individuals and also to NAFHA with respect to recording some data from those seldom herped counties.

Happy New Year to you and your family....

Steve here. I live in AK but I try to make it to AZ at least once a year (have family there as well as herps, helps with the wife)

Any herp is COOL but my love is any snake. I love to field hunt (walk) but with pain problems I can't hike like I want to.

Used to live in CA which was great being able to herp year round, snakes one month, salamanders the next. Just way to many people.

Used to keep some snakes but due to traveling and stuff, I no longer have a collection

Seeing herps in the field and photography is why I herp. As with all real herpers, respect for the animals / locales is parimount.

I will be in AZ in June and hope to knock a few lifers off the list and add more to the database.

Hi, Steve. Welcome to the AZ Chapter Forum. You're probably like most of the rest of us. I like to hike a little, see a few herps, photograph, and be part of the NAFHA process. Actually, the database is a good way to keep track of your activities. Are you currently living in Arkansas? That's a good place to herp also.

Here is one story from a while back.

One night spent cruising a 25 mile stretch, 3 round trips, just over 11 hrs (1800 - 0530).
species: C. atrox - 1
C. cerastes cercombombus - 113 - including a pair of males in combat

went back next night. Could only do one round trip but added 33 more cerastes.

I'll never forget that night.

About me: retired USCG, Have family in AZ so I get to visit at least once a year if I'm lucky. I no longer have a collection, but I used to breed / sale some Lampropeltis ssp but with travel and where I live it just isn't practical anymore

Where to start... I was into herping as a kid growing up (now 33), but have only recently started getting back into reptiles. I spent 8 years in EOD and seperated from the military in 2006 to go to college. I graduated last May and moved to Tucson for work. Since I've been here I've picked up a few Ball pythons and Rosy Boas as pets, but want to get back out to the wild. I saw some interesting animals on my backpacking trip to Mt Lemmon last June whilehere during my internship. I did get a chance to see a Cal Mountain Kingsnake last year's Memorial weekend when I went camping with friends in Nor Cal. My hobbies also include backpacking, computers and working on cars (but havent worked on a car in a while). Here are some pics:
