New York snake-cicle

Post by sjfriend »

Was out fossil hunting a couple days ago near Syracuse New York. The weather was 33f and snowing off and on when we flipped a young Eastern Garter snake. The poor thing was all but frozen. Picked it up to prevent it from being smashed when the rock was replaced. It coiled around my fingers and seemed to hold on tight enjoying the heat.

There are some cool (no pun intended  ) articles on 'anti-freeze' glycoproteins in the blood of Garters, frogs and turtles, fish in Arctic waters have this mechanism too, I dont know if knowledge of the fish anti freeze blood pre dates our knowledge of it in herps, but I wouldnt be surprised.
