herping Eugene/Portland area late june

Post by pythonregius3 »

I will be in this area for work in late June and i have never been to the Northwest before. I never collect any animals and am very careful not to disturb any habitat. I only like to see animals in their natural habitat and take photos. I understand you are probably protective of your favorite spots just like i am so i am not sure how much help i might get on this but if anyone can give me any tips on general or even specific locations that would be awesome. Tips on roads to cruise, parks to look in or any details would be helpful as I know nothing about the area. i mostly am into snakes but seeing any helps would be awesome.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Travis.

Travis,
If you happen to have time one day to stop in Corvallis, I could take you to some spots for snakes. Perhaps there is someone on the forum that could take you places to find amphibians.

Turtles and frogs and garter snakes in lakes and marshes.

Garter snakes and alligator lizards and racers in meadows/clearings/clearcuts.

Stream salamanders and frogs in forested streams in the hills.

In Portland, Google Earth will quickly lead you towards places where you can find stuff if you look for any of those three habitats I just listed. I have yet to ever be skunked in Portland - every new stream, new marsh, new clearing of sufficient size has that stuff.
