RFI Herping Southern India

Hi Folks,
I'll be traveling to India for a teacher exchange. I'll be visiting schools and doing some teaching while I'm there. My best opportunity to get out and poke around for herps will be when I'm at my host town which will be in Chennangkuppam, roughly half way between Bengaluru and Chennai. I'd be curious to hear from anyone with experience from that region of India regarding herping opportunities.

Also, I'll be teaching some lessons to share our environmental education program with students there. One of my favorite projects has been involving our students in the Maryland Amphibian and Reptile Atlas and now the MD Biodiversity Project. I am considering an activity to collect amphibian recordings around the schoolyard in Chennangkuppam and conducting some classroom analysis. Is anyone aware of a good resource for frog and toad calls for that region?

Any help will be appreciated!

Tom

You cannot collect any animals in India without proper permits, its a sure way to screwed royally. Best person to get in touch there will be Rom or MCBT, they generally have herp walks with Irulas in vellore or outskirts of Chennai. I will ask my friend and send you contact details of Rom and other herpers.

Thanks Chaitanya! No plans to collect anything-I hope to photograph in situ only. Also, I hope to record some vocalizations of frogs for some activities with students. Thanks for your assistance!
