Herpetology/Collections Curating/Husbandry Jobs?

Hey everyone,

I have been trying to look for herp related work out of state was of late and been having a tough time. I don't have an educational background in Biology (my degree is in Political Science and Environmental Studies), but have experience in curating/managing living collections (Zoo and currently Director of Animal Care and Operations at a herp-centric science education organization). I guess my question is, is there an online resource for such jobs? I stumbled upon the Parcplace.org job listing site, but I was wondering if there were any other sites like this?

Or maybe I have to just look up individual job listings at museums/zoos?

Strange question, sorry.

Zach

Hey Zach,

You can always try the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists website. They have a job board, http://www.asih.org/jobs. There is also the Texas A&M Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences Job Board, http://wfscjobs.tamu.edu/?job_category= ... -positions. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) collects all job posts for zoos and aquariums at their site, http://www.aza.org/jobs. There were 14 job posts there between yesterday and now. For federal herp jobs you will need to make a profile at https://www.usajobs.gov/ and search the site. If you want advice about that I can help you. You can also check out the Society for Conservation Biology, http://careers.conbio.org/jobs/. There is the Center for North American Herpetology as well, http://www.cnah.org/ but I find that their website is not always up-to-date. All that being said, there are jobs out there but they aren't always the easiest to find. I am on a list-serv which emails me jobs as they come up, sometimes before they are posted on a website, and I find that is really the best way to find a job.

Good luck on the job search. Let us know how it goes.

Cheers, Heather

This topic was brought up before and a couple of us have suggested starting a job board on the FHF where we can post jobs as we hear about them, http://www.fieldherpforum.com/forum/vie ... =2&t=22068.

Cheers, Heather

I believe we have a former or current employee of the St Louis institution here on FHF. I've known or met a few zoo herp keepers over the years and developed the insight that they have a pretty tight little community with a lot of co-awareness. I suspect your best bet would be to get to know one of them, and ask for help networking. That might also help keep you out of an institution that's not a great work environment.

Barring or perhaps in addition to that, I concur re: the AZA website.

Good luck, man. Not a strange question, no need for apologies either.
