Salamander ID

Post by bentley7_7 »

Can anyone help ID this salamander? It was found around 2PM walking in the sun on this rock face. The location is in Franklin County, VA. The surrounding areas are dominated by Chestnut oak, Mountain Laurel, and Rhododendron. Let me know what you guys think!

Thanks, Alex

Interesting find. It looks to me like a Plethodon wehrlei from the Dixie Caverns area.

I agree with wehrlei. Was it really walking on those rocks in the midday sun? That seems really unusual.

I bet something happened to it, like maybe it fled its hiding place because of a predator or a rockfall or a flooding rain.
