Re: Rain?
A good rainstorm near the beginning of March would make for some awesome herping. I hope we receive at least 1/2" in most areas, and much more in others. I'll believe it when I see it though...

Re: Rain?
We down here in SoCal don't find anything intentionally. As we told you last week, when Jim looks for SG Slenders, he finds Rosy Boas, and when we look for Specks, we find Lyre Snakes. So there should be no problem.
Nick and I would LOVE to come up, too. Maybe, sometime later in spring or early summer. March and April are too busy for us.
And here is the NWS weather forecast for SoCal:
A POTENT BUT VERY FAST MOVING COLD FRONT WILL WHIP THROUGH THE
AREA EITHER SATURDAY NIGHT OR SUNDAY MORNING. THE GFS AND ECMWF
REMAIN AT ODDS WITH THE TIMING, AND THE GFS CLEARLY IS THE
STRONGER OF THE TWO WITH MUCH BETTER PVA AND STRONGER SOUTHERLY
FLOW, BUT THE GFS IS ABOUT 6 HOURS SLOWER. BOTH SOLUTIONS WOULD
SUPPORT ABOUT 3 HOURS OF AT LEAST MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN WITH THE
FRONT, BUT EVEN WITHOUT CONVECTION THE GFS SOLUTION MIGHT BE
BORDERING ON RAINFALL RATES OF A HALF INCH PER HOUR, WHICH OPENS
THE DOOR FOR POSSIBLE BURN AREA ISSUES. SO WILL HAVE TO MONITOR
THIS OVER THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS.
BEHIND THAT FRONT LATE SUNDAY INTO MONDAY MORNING WE REMAIN IN A
FAIRLY MOIST WEST/NORTHWEST FLOW WHICH ISN`T PARTICULARLY
CONDUCIVE TO PRECIP SOUTH OF PT CONCEPTION BUT MODELS SHOW SOME
ENERGY ALOFT COMING THROUGH SO IT`S HARD TO RULE OUT SHOWERS AT
THIS POINT. MODEL QPF IS PRETTY LIGHT THOUGH SO PROBABLY NOT MORE
THAN MAYBE ANOTHER QUARTER OR HALF INCH ON TOP OF WHAT HAPPENS
WITH THE COLD FRONT SUNDAY.
FAIRLY LOW CONFIDENCE IN THE DETAILS LATE MONDAY AND TUESDAY AS
WELL. THE EC TRANSITIONS TO A MUCH DRIER NORTH TO NORTHEAST FLOW
LATE MONDAY INTO TUESDAY WHILE THE GFS BRINGS IN ANOTHER SLUG OF
MOISTURE MONDAY NIGHT FOR ANOTHER SHOT OF PRECIP. THIS FAR OUT
MODELS TEND TO BE PRETTY FLIPPANT WITH THESE SORTS OF FEATURES SO
AGAIN, CONFIDENCE LOW. (emphasis added)
Sounds like maybe 1 inch to 1.5 inches total to me, if that. Not terrible, but not exactly the deluge we are all hoping for.

Of course, I'm kidding, but you exaggerate a wee bit. I'm sure I could find helleri, chucks, night lizards, banded geckos, etc... if I was looking for them.
That said, herping is like real estate. Location, location, location- or is it range, habitat, conditions. I can't seem to remember
Here in the central CA, our El Nino usually means wet March and April. We had one in '98 where the sunny weather didn't hit until 3rd week of June.

Well, you better be or else ...Youse guys just must not be very good
Of course, I'm kidding,
This just in from the NWS:
"THE NEXT WAVE OF PRECIP FOR LATE NEXT WEEK, ASSOCIATED
WITH AN ATMOSPHERIC RIVER STRETCHING BACK TO THE TROPICS AND SAGGING
SOUTH THROUGH CALIFORNIA, IS EXPECTED TO BE THE BIGGEST RAIN EVENT
IN THIS TWO WEEK PERIOD AND COULD GENERATE MULTIPLE INCHES OF RAIN
TO THE AREA FRIDAY THROUGH NEXT WEEKEND. "
Now, THAT is beginning to sound more like El Nino. Don't hold your breath, of course, but with this weekend's rain (about 1-2 inches coastal) and then another, even better shot of rain the following weekend, March may actually turn out to be a good month.

Re: Rain?
Yesterday's rain brought out the salamanders...onto my driveway. Right in the middle of downtown Santa Cruz:

Re: Rain?
Large-blotched ensatinas came out in full force late last night in San Diego County. Foggy, misty conditions eventually turned into a light rain shower. Then, I saw a total of 18 in about 90 minutes, including this very attractive juvenile:
I found 3 or 4 of them right as they emerged from underground, with dry dirt partially covering their bodies. I took that as an indication that I arrived at just the right time.
Anyone else find salamanders recently??
Jeff
