Your 2016 SE Chapter Officer Team and a call to action

Post by Josh Holbrook »

Howdy folks,

For 2016, we have:

President, Josh Holbrook

Vice President, Tamara McConnell

IB Representative, Tamara McConnell

Education Specialist, Nick Barys (Simus343)

It was also suggested that we have outing coordinators for different areas - by the way I see it, the most sensible way would be to either have outing coordinators by state, or by physio-geographic region. What I mean by the second is, it is easier for me to get to/attend a outing in the Piedmont of SC or GA than it would be to make it to a meeting on NC's Coastal Plain - say at Croatan NF or something like that.

My thought would be this: let's hear some volunteers and they can decide whether they'd like to coordinate outings for a whole state, or if they'd prefer a specific region. I myself am already planning an outing to South Mountains State Park again, so I'd like to volunteer as the "Eastern Mountains" region coordinator, though there would be plenty of room for someone to be a coordinator on the West side of the continental divide in Eastern TN, for instance.

Thoughts/volunteers?

-Josh

PS - I'll sticky-fy this after a couple of days.

Regional outing coordinators:
Lower Alabama - Tamara McConnell
Central and N. Alabama - Adam Cooner
Western NC and SC - Josh Holbrook

As stated in the election post, I'll volunteer for central and/or northeast Alabama.

Thanks all - I'll keep a rolling tab until we get most of our regions filled up (or our volunteers exhausted), then we'll strategize.

Peninsular Florida here, more specifically Gulf Coast/Central FL. I need to ask Noah if he's down for planning another "Herp-a-palooza" somewhere in our region this year.

Tamara, I'd be game to try and attend something in S. Alabama :).

I could see about something in NW Florida to just a little east of the ANF region. I spent this past weekend in Wakulla county studying waterfowl for school. I struck out on snakes 100% despite looking under every palm frond, log, and levy rock. I'm heading back there again later either in April or the end of May, or both - probably both. I'm making a solid point of it, I'm going to be targeting multiple lifers for myself in the region. So, that'd be more of a 2-3 week advance "shout out" than anything big like the typical chapter meeting. April would all depend on how my grades are at that point, need above a certain GPA for grad school acceptance. I'll be there in May will be right after I finish finals.

However, I am still in favor of trying a chapter meeting sometime, aside from the sub-chapter meetings. I feel like part of the reason that we stay so functional as an entire chapter may be the meeting, out than our friendly laid back southern hospitality haha ;).

Question. I noticed that there is a Mexico, California & Arizona chapter seperate from their Geopgraphical region... yet no Florida chapter. As residents of South Florida, it makes it very difficult for those representatives whom reside in Florida to attend events in the Southeast.

So I move for Florida to receive our own sub-Chapter and secede from the Southeast. Geographically and herpetologically speaking, we differ greatly from the rest of the Southeast.

Danny,
We've got a system that works for us here in the SE Chapter. You tried to get Florida to 'secede' a few years ago before the crash, and that never went anywhere.

You haven't posted here in years and now you come back and try to split this up. If you feel that Florida should be its own subforum, that is fine; but please, participate more regularly here first before trying to push that agenda. Contribute dialog and some photos; put yourself into the community and let us get to know you. Then, I think you will see that what we have going here works for all of us. Yes, we are geographically spread out, but that is okay. Besides, after contributing here for a while, even if you still think Florida should 'secede' then at least you may have a little more following.

Don't get me wrong: I'm all for the regional outings that have been mentioned here- and my understanding of them is that they are not going to be exclusive to only the people in that region, but that anyone (SE chapter or not) is welcome to attend. The regional gatherings are just that- a place/time for people whom are interested to gather.

But splitting Florida off is not going to help anything.

Forgive my rant, but I think others that have been here a while will agree- we've already gone over this.

Agreed. If Florida had its own Chapter it'd be mostly knife fights over 'secret spots'. No disrespect to the peaceable folk in NFL :thumb:

Agreed as well. That notion came out of left field, and it doesn't really serve a purpose. Splitting Florida from the rest of the chapter wouldn't improve anything over how it currently stands.
