I was supposed to do this back in early February. I had forgotten all about it... Last night I was looking through posts within the Fish portion of the Interzonial forumal realm of a United Herpnation and came across a beautifuly coloured artistic obscurity. Filmed underwater in Australia with a GoPro. (totally cool, I suggest everyone views it) So, it re-inspired me to do this. I originally felt bad about the rattlesnake free-handling beef that I had reluctantly fallen into and how disrespectful I got. I have since bought my first snake stick (tongs) as of last year. So, this was intended to be a gesture of truce with the forum and people I had insulted. Now here I am re-finding the importance due to similar confrontations I'm having on the dream-like virtual sand lands of a Joshua induced, Mohave Reservational Frustration, of bitter vocational expression, of Yucca... (it's an art thing ) I hope any and all angry confrontational parties can enjoy some aspect of this and come to grips with the terms of likelihood that binds us.
A,B,C,or D..?
A & C were the two original concepts that I loosely orchestrated last night... B was a melodic riff I wrote in high school (first go with the lyics in this recording)... and D was a spontaneous freestyle
Any music creators out there are free to add their own versions! ...Highly encouraged Make Jim's song come to life.
Got Dicamp pics...?
Lyrics:
Dicamptodon
Deep in a log, a cool contradiction
The biggest of what should be small
Soft and dappled with tearing dentition.
Weak and harmless? No…Not at all!
A ‘Lumbering’ Sally? Who would believe?
But only ‘lumber’ will suffice.
With gila-quick snap, your fingers he’ll cleave
Mistaking his ‘cuteness’ for ‘nice’!
How is a Sally, such a Bad Creature?
You think… while blinking, with slack-jaw.
You stand, taking in each fleshy feature,
Realizing now… you stood in awe!
If the video doesn't play for some reason it's because I darken the vid color. It's processing right now and I don't know if the code will change or not when finished. If it does, I replace the URL. Let me now if there;s any problems with it...

That's pretty cool Richard... don't know that anyone's ever put my poetry to music before...
Not sure why... but it kept bringing 'Spill the Wine' by the Animals, to mind...
This really blew my mind,
The fact that me, an overfed, long-haired, leaping gnome,
Should be the star of a Hollywood movie...Hmm

Cool man Which did you like best...A,B,C,or D? If I get enough people to post Dicamp photos to this, I'll do a short vid with their pics and incorporate a drumbeat.
Ok, who's the lucky lady that wants my to take her to Napa to herp and spill some wine in the process???

I like A. I especially liked the way you sang the phrase Stood in Awe.
It was piercing and encompassing.

Re: Jim's Song - Dicamptodon (written by Jim Bass)
You know... when I first posted this little poem... I invited any other FHF poets (pingleton, et al) to add verses, provided they kept to form.
perhaps what this poem needs, to be a song, is a chourus, to break up the stanzas.... Dicampedon... so thick n long... makes me want to sing this song... or add your own... i don't care...

Re: Jim's Song - Dicamptodon (written by Jim Bass)
I like the arrangement! I think a verse, chorus, verse would make it boring...take away the obscurity of it. It's more or a Tom Waits - Shore Leave type thing... poem put to music rather than an actual song. Keeps the integrity of the original concept.hellihooks wrote:You know... when I first posted this little poem... I was gonna ask you to attach a link to that original post. I have no idea when or how that came about. I thought it was a suggestion for a campfire song... that why I decided to contact you in February asking permission to incorporate it
I'm planning on making a more polished recording of the vocal and strings...then over dubbing some feedback sounds and the adding a drumbeat with an obscure setting on my electric drum set. Maybe some electric guitar or harmonica as well... I've got a couple weird instruments and some pots and pans to bang on too
We need enough pics from different members to make it a true dicamptidon tribute tho...
A bitten herper hand pic with blood would rock beyond belief!!!
Re: Jim's Song - Dicamptodon (written by Jim Bass)
This is a copy paste of the original message to Jim:
My only Sally poem, so far... and just 3 verses... no chorus... maybe build a chorus round 'lumbering Sally'? Or...Di..camp.. to...don have at it man...

Jim...I remember you posting lyrics or rather a poem about salamanders field herping one time. I can't remember what post that was on. if you don't mind, I wanted to put that to an acoustic blues piece. if that sounds cool paste me the lyrics...

Re: Jim's Song - Dicamptodon (written by Jim Bass)
I was working on a collection of herp-related poetry... this one was fun...
Obligatory Side Blotches
In every So Cal post
Cannot help but take a pic,
Of the lizard you see most.
Here and there, they’re everywhere,
From the deserts to the coast
Every day on every trip,
Bout them, it’s hard to boast.
Some say they are delicious,
Sautéed and served on toast.
But I like to wrap bout 10 on a spit
And have a Side Blotch roast.
Or… eat them raw like sushi,
Or chug them down with juice
But first you have to catch them,
So don’t forget your noose.
Fleeting little tasty snacks
If you believe the hype
But be careful if they’re mostly green…
It means that they’re not ripe.
So don’t bemoan the little Uta
Nature’s rainbow-hued trail mix
But before you munch, collect the data
And don’t forget the pics.

The human eye is common
Of billions 5 to 6 feet high
Adult approximations all
Surpassed in aspect by a Fly.
If I saw a bored man chewing impaled Utas on the plain
I'd chuckle for the nematode
Who found a World's Fare in his brain.

I'm too virulent for any parasites to feast upon me... they themselves die after just one bite.Kelly Mc wrote:The human eye is common

I hope you don't think I meant you. I didn't!
I didn't mean any human in particular, just a silly ditti for the wee underdogs

Re: Jim's Song - Dicamptodon (written by Jim Bass)
Well, looks like this is gonna be it for me gang. Time for me to move on down the road... I went ahead and did a recording of the 4th version (D) for fun. I'm dying of boredom over here It had to be the 1st or the 4th... I liked the 4th a little better. I think it captured more of a foggy swamp discovery in Santa Cruz mountains vibe. I've only seen One Dicamptodon and that was during one of Lawrence's survey outings. Huge monstrous beautiful beast beneath a big ol' log
Seriously the coolest Salamander I've ever seen
I added some scrap recordings at the end for an encore Keep the forum alive peeps. I'm out Enjoy...
Oh, and Jim... thanks for breaking my bad habit and getting through to me about hand catching rattlesnakes I don't do it anymore and I have snake tongs and a hook now in case I come across one in the road. Probably saved my life man Take care
