New to Far west San Antonio

Post by aroy6112 »

Hi I am new to Texas and recently moved to San Antonio. I live in a VERY suburban neighborhood and was wondering what time of day and year are best for finding different species. I was also wondering where to look (under boards rocks, dens, etc...) and what might be common in my area.

Bexar County is one of the highest-diversity counties you can find in the US for overall (native) species. Granted, some of the records are older ones, and some species are likely overcome by urban sprawl, but there is still a lot to see. As it cools off there should be some interesting things pop up. Ideally you've already started finding some of the more common stuff, perhaps in your own yard--Green Anoles, Mediterranean Geckos, TX Spiny Lizards, TX Rat Snakes, Western Diamondbacks, Gulf Coast Toads, etc.

Consider joining the South Texas Herpetology Association. They can help.
