Cameron Jacobs (CJ)- Amateur snake hunter

Post by CJJreptiles »

Hey everybody my name is CJ, I'm a fifteen year old herper. I live in Santa Clarita valley and snake hunt throughout Southern California. Im friends with ricrbt and go hunting with him often. I discovered snakes in my fifth grade class and have been hooked ever since. Since then I have built a pretty sweet collection of rear fang and oddball colubrids :D . Each year I get more and more into herping but I still have a lot to learn, and I hope to do just that in this group. Thank you for adding me!

Welcome to FHF CJ - Great to have you on board.

Just like you, I am also new to field herping since about May of 2014 - Except I'm a little older than you ... I'm 59

But I remember when I was your age ... I was a field herper and didn't even know it.

So ... I kind'a just picked up where I left off about 45 years ago.

Once again ... welcome to FHF :)

No ... I've never met Jim. But I think I'm getting the picture.

Does it have to do with a helleri bite to the hand that went bad?

Welcome to the forum CJ. Looks like we are pretty much neighbors.

Ricrabt - Your avatar reminds me how much I enjoyed the rifleman. Going to have to catch the show again when it comes on the weekends.

In all fairness, my first two bites (75/76) was when i was a dumb teenager, who had never been allowed to keep snakes growing up... so... day before i turned 18 (and still in high school) i rented an apt, bought a car (with $ i had saved from working since age 13) and packed my bags. I was born on my Mom's birthday, so next day it was all about "happy birthday mom... cyaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" within 2 months I had 150 snakes in a one bedroom apt... bout half of which were local crotes. Freehandled most of them bout every day, and had a 4 ft helli i regularily wore as a necktie. At that time, that was one of the less dangerous things i was doing on a daily basis... lets just say it's pretty amazing i'm here today.

My first bite was very bad... nearly lost my arm and became allergic to horse serum... so on the next bite they couldn't administer antivenin and they lost and brought me back several times... but rather than actual tissue loss, my right hand pretty much just shrank down into a claw... and now after 4 major reconstructive hand surgeries over the next 20 years... it still has a decidedly 'hook shape'

Having (finally) wised up, I then went 35 years working with crotes without getting tagged, till 2010, when I lost focus for one second, and caught a fang through a bag, while in the field. and yeah... went herping on the way home from the Hsp... ;)

Jeff Teel, on LocalityRosys started calling me helleri hands, which morphed to hellihands, and finally hellihooks... and it stuck. i like it... i'm the only hellihooks in the world...

Here is THE hellihook... ;)

No... don't have full range of motion, but I've largely switched from being right-handed to left-handed... and you're only disabled if you consider yourself disabled... there is NOTHING I can't get done, one way or another... :thumb:

If I put the hook on you... you DON'T get away...
