Decent looking for an ugly snake?

Post by chrish »

I'll post some more stuff from my trip later, but I thought I would start by sharing a photo of this ratsnake from southeast Arkansas over the weekend.

Normally, "Black" Ratsnakes that aren't completely black are quite ugly, IMHO. But this snake was pretty nice looking overall. We saw a few others around the area (mostly DOR) but this one really stood out.

Find any of the "ugly" black calligaster up there? I don't see anything wrong with that rat snake!

From near the border in LA last weekend:

Nice shots guys! Seems like it was the weekend for ugly black snakes. Mine just came from areas a little further east.

Clearly, it's larger than the one you found earlier this spring, Kyle.

Chris

Looks like it's one full pocket gopher larger!

Glad you guys had some success there!

Based on the fresh wound it had on it's side, I'd say you're probably right. Thanks for pointing us in the right direction.

Hopefully, I can get out to see some of those ugly calligaster with you guys one of these weekends.

I hope so too, it's been a while since we've been out.

Here's a not-so-ugly ugly calligaster from the same area:
