Hi Everyone,
I recently spent 4 months in central america, 2 months in Colombia and a week in Peru. I have so many photos of amphibians, but for most countries...well all countries except Costa Rica there is little to no field guides to amphibians of the countries in these regions. I wondered if anyone could suggest any online references, species lists to regions or anything that would help to ID amphibians of these regions (Guatemala, honduas, nicuragua, belieze, Peru, colombia). I was hoping to have as many of my photos ID'd as possible before I wrote a post of the herps I saw.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers
Angus

Re: Central American amphibian Identification help
There are no books available for Nicaragua, Peru, Belize, or southern Guatemala. However, there are books for northern Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica, etc. There are also Amphibians of Central America.
Re: Central American amphibian Identification help
Even if you can't get ID's, I'd love to see some of your photos on here.

Hi Gus,
Here is one of the best resources out there for quick id of amphibian species. Sometimes the information is a little questionable (sometimes the photographs are wrong, but usually are ok), but overall it is a good site. Good luck.

Another good one for Panama in particular is this: http://panamaherps.info/

I agree with the amphibiaweb suggestion above. Also
The CR savage guide with have a lot of overlap with the other central american countries and is comprehensive of CR.
Here is one book where a lot of the author's experience comes from Peru:
http://www.amazon.com/Reptiles-Amphibia ... 0813026237
This is a little out of date and is missing a bunch of species but used with other guides is helpful:
http://www.amazon.com/Iquitos-Region-Am ... 0893380474
You can download a PDF guide to frogs of a reserve in central amazonia here:
http://www.revistas.usp.br/phyllo/artic ... 2672/46341
Here is a small photo guide from Peru that can help:
http://fm2.fieldmuseum.org/plantguides/ ... o%2002.pdf
This has a wealth of info. Its not really a guide but does have species accounts.
http://www.amazon.com/Cusco-Amaz%C3%B3n ... 0801439973
I found that you have to use a bunch of guides to rule out, and narrow things down. Most of the Peru things I listed above are for amazonian peru, not sure where you were.
You can also post pics here for id help. Just number your pics so we can reference them easily.

Kfen - I visted Reserva Adolpho Ducke in 2008 and was gifted the guide by some grad students at INPA while I was there. It is a wonderful, if not small, book. I just got a kick out of seeing it pop up here!
