Questions about herping records

Post by herper1 »

Maybe this would be a better question for the main forum but I figured I would ask friends first. I am able to find a lot of information concerning birding records, such as world record for most bird species seen in the lower 48 in a year, most seen worldwide in one year, most species seen in a lifetime, and so on. I was just wondering if anyone knows of any such info or records for herping. A few years ago somebody asked a question about everyones life count and some herpers had some surprisingly high numbers. In a way my competitive nature wants to compete. In another way I am glad our hobby has not progressed to that point yet and we are still relatively living in obsurity. Anyhow just something to think about while hopefully everone is putting together there year end posts!!

Have you started using NAHERP or Herpmapper?

http://www.naherp.com/

http://www.herpmapper.org/

I don't think you can use either for much of the information you are asking about, but you can record your own finds there and keep track of your own life list.

At the risk of being impeached for not having my data up-to-date (I plan on spending some time this month doing so), here is everything that I have on NAHERP: http://www.naherp.com/search.php?r_owne ... &r_county=

I haven't created a Herpmapper account yet; I was waiting until I get up-to-date on my HERP records, and then I'll see if I can import them.

If you look at the stickies above you will all kinds of counts and scorecards.

http://www.fieldherpforum.com/forum/vie ... f=7&t=9621

Everyone that contributes to H.E.R.P (www.naherp.com) has a life list that they can view at any time.

After a person is logged in they go to this link http://www.naherp.com/reports/life-list.php, and your life list of herps recorded into HERP show up.. Pretty Cool stuff.

As has been pointed out, HERP was started for those very reasons (and more) with HerpMapper following suit.

With herpetology being the way it is, don't ever expect something like eBird to take off. The old saying "herps can't fly" applies here. With few exceptions, herpers have always been a secretive (selfish? ) bunch.
