Found in high grassland/sandy soil at around 4100', eastern AZ. If it was in the mountains I'd call it a young Yarrows and be done with it...but it wasn't in the mountains. Clark's perhaps? - but the collar looked too complete, and not much banding on the front legs.

That's gotta be it! Thanks gents. For whatever reason, that taxon is not listed in my Holycross/Brennan AZ field guide.

Looks like a bimaculosus, but I think you said it was a young one. Some more info would help, like a pic of the dorsal pattern and maybe a locale, like county at least. I think magister is the only other possibility.

Thank you Brian and Terry for all the great input! Sounds like we're all in agreement - it's bimaculosus. I'll enter it into the database as such.

Nice find Kent. Here is a juvenile (YOY) I found in Cochise Co. in a known bimaculosus locality this year...
I like your note of "high grassland" locale. I believe bimaculosus favors this habitat type in Chihuahuan desert grassland. Interestingly, Monty Wilkinson and I are working on a similar problem for a Scelop from the Catalinas. If it turns out to be a "bimac," it would be a county record for Pima Co. in the database.
Love range extensions and other novel records....
