First morning started off with a bang! An OBX Kingsnake slithering by our boardwalk to the beach! A lifer for me.
After I set him down he laid there belly up for what I thought was a pretty cool pic!

The cottonmouth was the one species I was hoping to see during my trip to the south. I found one in the second place I looked.

Then we helped what I believe is a mud turtle across the road. If you know which species of mud turtle this is I would love to know. Another lifer!

My daughter and I with a black tip shark or maybe a spinner or maybe a sandbar. IDing sharks is harder than turtles. Lol.

Re: Obx HERPS on vacation
Dude, I was just researching OBX herps. I might have a chance in the future to stay out there for a while. You have an eastern mud turtle, and yes, a southern leopard frog. That OBX king is gorgeous....you found it on the crawl? Even better!

The Cottonmouth shots are pretty awesome. I have yet to find one cruising through the water like that. They have this way of just looking awesome while doing whatever they're doing.
Re: Obx HERPS on vacation
Great pics! Love that King. I was in OBX last summer and loved it. You did great!
Re: Obx HERPS on vacation
That first cottonmouth shot is awesome! Your whole trip looks great!
The shark is a sandbar. The front of the dorsal lines up about a third of the way in the pectoral. A blacktip or dusky will line up with the end of the pectoral. Fun to catch no matter what species

Thanks for the help with the ID's guys! I only got out a couple mornings during the week, I couldn't imagine what you could see if you were able to spend some serious time down there.
I also had a rainbow snake by the tail but most of it got down a hole, I let go so as not to harm it and was not able to get a picture. Still a cool lifer!
ALOT of DOR's along the main highway, I was not able to stop to check any out.
Good luck if you get down there Mike!

Re: Obx HERPS on vacation
Anyone know if canebrakes and pigmy rattlers are found out there?
Re: Obx HERPS on vacation
I'm going down this Saturday for a week. My girlfriend (I live with her and we have five kids in between us) keeps reminding me this is a family vacation. ...uh huh.
Re: Obx HERPS on vacation
Brick- I've seen your pictures, I have a feeling your family won't mind a little herping! Lol.
Good luck down there. Can't wait to see your pics.
Mike- I saw some info that said canebrakes were possible. No first hand knowledge though.
