Your Favorite Herp Eye?

Post by asher1027 »

I love the eyes of herps. Post what you think is the coolest eye of any herp you've found here. I'll start... My favorite would have to be the plains spadefoot toad (Spea bombifrons). I absolutely love the contrast between the body and they eye.

Not the greatest pic in the world, but Sachatamia (Centrolene) ilex has to have one of the coolest eyes I've seen.

We had an "eyes" theme a few years back in the Image lab. There were some amazing images.

Some of the treefrogs are incredible as are many of the geckos.

Here's some interesting "eyes" behavior shots -

and of course, these things have cool eyes - Rena dulcis

Strophurus, have to be the most complex and interesting eyes in my opinion. I've always envied the Aussies for finding them.

I wish I had photos of either, but my favorite is a tie between Uroplatus fimbriatus and Strophurus ciliaris aberrans.

OK, not a herp, but cold blooded, and has scales... sort of. The eye of a Big Skate, commonly caught while fishing for halibut in Prince William Sound. Very neat eye, though!

I think that the Tokay gecko takes it for me so far.

What a difference in apparent attitude posed by location of eyes in the pictured coachwhips. I like.

Probably the eye (and brow) of the sidewinder:

but so many have interesting eyes like this night snake:

and this chirping frog:

I like sidewinder eyes as well. They're so '50s.
